I took a recent day trip arranged through Sea Kayak Carolina. The staff was helpful and friendly. They use high-quality boats and equipment and got me equipped and out on the water efficiently. I was impressed with their professionalism, local knowledge and commitment to safe and fun paddling. The paddling environment around the shop is varied and interesting. We headed for the ocean, but another group chose to stay in more sheltered water. SKC appears to be able to accomodate paddlers at all different skill levels and interests. The shop is reasonably close to downtown Charleston. There is even a public transit bus that stops 100 yards from the shop, although service is infrequent. Nice outfit through which to arrange everything from a half-day trip through a week-long intensive training course. I purchased a Deuter backpack from The Outdoor Shoppe recently for a backpacking trip I'm planning to North Carolina. Being new to the sport, I really wasn't sure what qualities I was looking for in a pack, which brands were best, or how to fit myself for one. They new it all! Dont listen to any of these clowns below. The Bicycle Shoppe on Meeting is great. I have lived here for 7 years during college and post-college and have always taken my bike there for repairs, maintenance, etc. They are cool guys, always willing to help, get free air for your tires, whatever. It is a smaller shop, so you may not have the best selection, but for a downtown location, it has what you need. I got a full tune up and brand new components and gear shifts on my crappy factory Jamis mountain bike. They started the tune up right away because my bike is my main form of transportation, and did a great job. Support your local, original Bike Shoppe. I am not a sailor. However, when I went out with one of OSA's instructors on one of their big boats we had a blast. We went off-shore past Fort Sumter through what they called jetties and into the open water. That part was a little scary but Ned assured me that we were going to be fine. I live in Summerville and I never even knew the Inn was here! I stumbled across thier winter getaway special and fiquered it would be nice to get away, but stay in town. I had a fantastic stay! I actually went alone and just soaked in the HUGE tub and then curled up in front of the fireplace with a book and listen to CD's. It was Heaven. The rooms are really cool.
