How to Change the Outboard Motor Water Pump for a Sea Ray
Many experts agree that the water pump on an outboard motor should be changed annually. This shouldn't be a difficult task if you have some mechanical ability; only a few tools will be needed. The water pumps location should be between the upper engine housing and the gear case.
Things you'll need:
- Socket Wrenches
- Gloves
- Towels
- Marine Grease
- Remove the gear case; you'll probably need a set of socket wrenches. Put the gear case somewhere so you can work on it easily. Most people have a workbench that is well lit. Some people choose to put the case in a vise to help stabilize it.
- Remove the water pump housing from the gear case. You'll probably need socket wrenches for this as well.
- Remove the metal plate and rubber gasket from the gear case. This might be a dirty process so you should consider wearing gloves.
- Clean the gear case with towels. There will probably some oil residue lying in the bottom.
- Remove the water valve from the old pump housing and install it on the new water pump housing.
- Install the new metal plate and rubber gasket.
- Grease the motor shaft, gear case and new water pump housing.
- Install the new O-ring on the pump housing. You should be able to do this with your hands.
- Attach the water pump housing to the gear case.
- Attach the new gear case to the motor with the same wrenches and nuts you used to take the old gear case off.
- Test your engine to make sure the water pump works. If it doesn't, immediately shut it off. Inspect every part to make sure you properly put them together.
