Environmentally Friendly Products

What does it mean to be green? A green product is environmentally friendly, people friendly and leaves a small environmental footprint. Our cleaning solutions are safe, and nontoxic. We use a minimum of water (1/5th compared to steam cleaners), leaving more water in our lakes and reservoirs. We don’t use any chemicals, soaps or powders – so only dirty water is being flushed down the drain. ...read more

Articles by so called "experts"

Over the past few days, I have seen several articles posted here on how to take care of mold in certain situations, and invariably every one of them contained inaccurate and even dangerous advice and information.   As with any technical field that requires expertise, if you are going to write a how to article you need to research and get ACCURATE information from reliable sources and not rely on myth, urban legend or what your neighbor told you. If you want accurate information on how to take care of a mold problem contact a professional who is certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) .  There is a reason why many states now require IICRC certification and state licensing to take care of mold issues.   Do you really want to follow the advice in an article you found on line and put your family at risk? Mold is part of our environment, it is in the air around us all the time.   Mold becomes problematic when it is growing in our indoor environment at such levels that it becomes toxic.   You can't "kill" mold be spraying some type of miracle juice or bleach on it.   You can't paint over it and be done with it, and you can't just wash it off of porous surfaces like drywall.    If drywall is affected it has to be removed under contained conditions or you are going to spread it throughout the building and have a bigger problem. The best way to prevent mold?   Keep the humidity in your home to the proper levels.  If you have a water leak have it inspected and mitigated by a certified professional within 48 hours.   ...read more

Carpet cleaning myth versus reality

Having been in the carpet and upholstery cleaning business for almost 27 years now, I've heard a  lot of different things about carpet cleaning, and seen a lot of changes in the industry. One of the biggest myths is that having your carpet cleaned with water is going to damage it in some way.  Prior to the 1980's some of this was true.  Carpet were made with natural fibers, had jute or even horsehair padding, and using a water based cleaning method could cause shrinkage of the carpet.    Carpet cleaning equipment was mainly portable units that did not have a lot of vacuum power, so carpets took several hours or even days to dry completely. In the 1980's synthetic carpet fibers and backings were developed along with synthetic padding.  The carpet is flooded several times with water during the manufacturing process, and the dyes are heat set to assist with stain prevention.   Carpet cleaning equipment has come a long way with the development of high powered truck mounted equipment, which can  extract almost all of the water from the carpet during the cleaning process, leaving the carpet slightly damp and taking drying times from several hours or days to anywhere from 1 to 6 hours. Many people still insist on using a "dry" cleaning method because of this myth.   Most "dry" cleaning methods use water in varying amounts, and all of the dry cleaning methods were developed for use on commercial grade carpet, not residential carpet. Commercial carpet is made to withstand lots of abuse, it has a different weave and texture than residential carpet - it's like the guy with the buzz cut and the woman with the long flowing hair.  The guy can rub a brush in circles on his head with no problem, it's not going to mess up his hair or damage it.  If the woman tried it she'd have a knotted mess on her hands.     The Carpet and Rug Institute, www.carpet-health.org, which is an organization made up of carpet manufacturers, recently conducted an in depth 3rd party study on all of the different carpet cleaning methods, equipment and products.   The study concluded that hot water extraction cleaning using a certified professional cleaner is far superior at removing soils from the carpet than any other method.  In fact, when it came to actually removing the dirt (which is what cleaning is supposed to do) ALL of the dry cleaning methods failed the tests.  Because of this testing, the carpet manufacturers have now changed their warranties to require hot water extraction using a truck mounted system by an IICRC certified professional www.iicrc.org. Another myth is that cleaning your carpet too often is going to damage it.  Actually leaving the dirt and soil in your carpet is more damaging.  The dirt and soil in the carpet scratches the carpet fibers when you walk on it, which leads to additional wear.  Removing the dirt and debris regularly can add years to the life of your carpet and it can improve the indoor air quality in your home. Yet another is that vacuuming the carpet regularly is enough to keep it clean.  If you run your vacuum over the same area 11 times you will remove 54% of the dirt and debris in the carpet.  A professional cleaning with a truck mounted unit can remove up to 96% of the dirt and soil.   ...read more
