Channel Islands Boat Yard

1.0

By Slowride

I had my boat hauled for a hull inspection and noticed a zinc was deteriorating around the mounting bolts. I bought the divers dream from them and installed it while waiting for the surveyor. When the survey was done, the manager came out and informed me that he is going to charge me an additional $150. for installing the zinc, which was not included in the haul out contract. When I debated the issue, he told me that if I refused to pay that he would not launch my boat until I paid, which I did. I informed him that I would never use them again. I have used Ventura Harbor Boat yard for the last 13 years and hands down, they are the best in the county. ...read more

Catalina - Why Bother?

I've said it before; I'll say it again. If were forced to pick only one place in the world that I could sail it would be our very own Channel Islands. I now amend that to the Channel Islands less Catalina. Why bother? We sailed Sancerre all night on Th. to ensure we'd find a mooring in Two Harbors. (We did, but we could also have found one if we'd come down in daylight.) Since we went at night, there was no wind. I hate motoring. I don't like all-nighters and this required both. We spent our time in a spot almost as pretty as the least pretty place on Santa Cruz, and bow to stern, beam to beam with 50 or so strangers. (Some, really really strange). We had a couple of excellent meals while we were there and did a little kayaking. We  headed home, again in the dark, again - all night. Did I mention ... Nevertheless, if you want to go, I'll take you. It's more touristy than I like, but it's your cruise... ...read more

Pruitts complete ASA 104 - Bareboat Charter course

Karla and Larry didn't get exactly the training they'd planned on -- they go a great deal more: a great deal more wind, bigger seas and a lot of time at the helm dealing with gale conditions. The original intent was to sail to Santa Cruz and stick our noses in every anchorage, practice anchoring bow and stern and simulating heavy weather. No need for simulation - we saw winds to almost 50 kts. seas average 10 feet with the occasional kicker somewhere near 15. We did get to practice anchoring bow and stern. In fact, it took three attempts to get both anchors to set in Pelican anchorage... more than enough practice. When the wind piped up and it looked like we might be on a lee shore, we got underway for a night transit and anchoring at Yellowbanks. We dropped the hook in about 40 kts. of wind, which, uncharacteristically blew all night with gusts near 50. It's the only time I've ever felt the need to "clip in" at anchor. It was quite an experience - as we used to say in the Fleet - you can't buy training like that! ...read more
