Over the years at the Oil Barn we have always made it part of our complete service program to check and inflate spare tires when they are accessible and more often than not we find them either flat or so low they cannot be used. Sure, nobody wants to have to change a tire on the side of the road but having that "insurance" can in fact save an expensive road service call. Few blowouts or flats happen in convenient places and a spare tire has for generations been standard equipment on all vehicles. Recently many vehicle manufacturers have made the decision to eliminate the spare tire to save weight and help THEM pass CAFE fuel mileage standards mandated by our government. After all, eliminating the spare not only saves weight but also lowers the cost of each unit produced. To us this policy is very wrong and shows how the new generation of auto makers and engineers have a Very different attitude about the products they produce. The solution offered the car buyer now is to provide a "fix a flat" can, or in some cases a kit with a small compressor, of course if you have a blow out neither of these will be any help. Enter the "Run Flat" tire, thats right many new cars are equipped with these, and replacements begin at $300.00 PER TIRE! Some vehicle manufacturers DO offer a spare as an option though so we strongly suggest checking Before you buy that new car and remember if your vehicle has as standard equipment 4 run flat tires, at replacement time your looking at $1200.00. ( is this weight reduction and "fuel savings" really worth That we think NOT) What are "run flat tires" , well they are tires with heavier sidewalls so in the event of a flat you can safely drive to a tire shop. Keep in mind that because of the heavy sidewall your vehicle will ride rougher as well. We strongly suggest asking your dealer if that new vehicle your considering comes with a spare, many do not! ...read more

While servicing vehicles it has always been our policy to look for real or potential mechanical problems and report them to the customer. Over the years we have saved our customers a lot on repairs that ignored could become Very Costly. One concern we have had with this policy is many people simply do not fully understand the specifics of these mechanical issues and leave us not fully aware of the situation. To solve this problem we looked at cloud technology and now are able to photograph most problems, send the digital image through iCloud to our computer then print the photograph which is provided to the customer. The customer then simply shows the photo to the Mechanic Shop of their choice and can get an opinion and even a repair estimate. Every customer now has a specific and clear understanding of what we have found while performing the many checks we include with each oil change and the response has been Very Positive! ...read more
