Stefan Weber, the leader of the lighting projects thatBMWare working on, believes that there is good and bad light. That is why he and his team work so hard to develop headlights that deliver nothing but good light. While LED is considered the leader in that regard, BMW is now looking at blue-laser diode lights that are 1000 times brighter than LED’s, but which are a great deal more energy efficient. Regulations in different countries have made it hard for LED headlights to take a hold the way that automakers would like, and it now seems that the introduction of laser lights might kill off that technology before it was ever allowed to truly flourish. The BMW system will operate at 5500 to 6000 Kelvin, which is a color temperature that fits into international regulations. The bonus is that the laser lights operate towards the blue end of the scale, which helps the driver more readily see objects ahead, which in turn cuts out eye strain. BMW aren’t just looking at this form of lighting as specific to vehicles only, as they see it as something that can be used in multiple applications, including domestic. For now, though, much of the testing of the laser lights is being done on a night driving simulator. One of the concerns that folks may have is the Hollywood version of the laser that is usually employed by villains and attacking aliens to bring about destruction. The lasers used in the BMW headlights are contained area that sees them turned into a nonlaser cone of white light that will remain safe even when they are exposed in the event of a collision. LED’s operate at or near the same Kelvin level of the laser headlights, so you might wonder why they wouldn’t suffice. There are a number of benefits that laser headlights have over LED’s. The top benefit is being able to direct the laser light and have it focus on points off in the distance far more effectively than LED’s can do. Laser headlights take the best of what you get with LED’s – brightness, reliability, and life expectancy – and take them all to the next level. Efficiency is where laser headlights knock off all the rest, as the amount of energy the light loses in getting from Point A to Point B is minimal. TheBMW laserheadlights will make their debut on the 2014 i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. As with any electric model, power has to be conserved in other areas to ensure that the distance the car can travel on a full charge can then be extended. This is not likely to be the last vehicle to get the laser headlight treatment, especially since automakers across the world are now catching on to how effective they truly are when compared to HID or LED lights. The applications for lasers of this sort are now expanding well beyond the Blu-Ray player in your living room. ...read more

If you watch auto racing, you have likely heard the commentators talk about the carbon fibers (also known as carbon fibre) used in the production of the cars. Sure, you may only really care about the performance of your favorite driver, but wouldn’t it also be a little fun to learn about the properties of carbon fibers. We will try to do this is a way that is easy to understand, as the jargon can get a little complex at times. Let’s first talk about howcarbon fiberis made, which is quite the process in itself. The material is comprised of fibers that are mostly made up of carbon atoms. Those atoms are crystallized using a binding process and are then aligned in a parallel fashion along the axis of the fiber. The alignment of the crystals is what determines the strength of the carbon fiber. This is a rather costly method of production, which is why carbon fibers are generally only used in race cars, aircraft construction, and other high end transportation projects. The question that most of you probably have at this moment is why anyone would go to such lengths and expense to use carbon fibers. The most obvious reason, especially when we talk about cars, is that it is an incredibly strong material, yet also very lightweight. That means that the average race car made from carbon fiber materials will be strong enough to withstand the rigors of a race, but light enough to allow the car to move at tremendously high speeds. The material is generally required to have a certain level of stiffness, too, which is why carbon fibers are often used in conjunction with epoxy to create that effect. We spoke about the speeds thatrace carstravel at, but those pale in comparison to that of the average aircraft. The type of carbon fiber used there is a little different because it needs to possess stability properties in low abrasion and high dimensional form. The properties of the carbon fibers being used are usually specific to the needs of the equipment it is being used to produce. For example, stereo speakers would require strength and toughness properties, whilst also displaying a fair amount of vibration damping. The fact that carbon fiber also has great electrical conductivity properties means that it is now commonly used in electrical components and car hoods. The electromagnetic properties possessed by carbon fiber also makes it the perfect material for the medical field and much of the equipment used there. Yes, you are more than likely to hear about carbon fiber and its wonderful properties when you are watching racing, but as you can clearly see, this versatile material is not solely confined to the track. Who knows, you may soon even find it in the hood of the car that you use to drive you to work, as well as in the stereo housed in that car. ...read more
