I placed an order in march of this year. (Order #29062 (March 27, 2018) - A month later I called looking for my order which had not been received. I was told the collars were on back order and I would get them shortly. Another month has passed and still no merchandise. BUY BEWARE! THE PHONE NUMBER GOES TO A MACHINE NOW, NO EMAIL RETURNS! Here's a short and easy topic that will hopefully help alot of people when buying Handspun Yarn. Commercial yarns often use terms like "sports weight", "Fingering", "Lace", "worsted", "DK". And the avid knitter will know the weight of a yarn by these terms. Although I have seen hand spinners use these terms to discribe the weight of their handspun yarn,I prefer not to. Several reasons: 1.) Even in commercial yarns, the use of these terms can result in a varying weights of yarns 2.) Do to handspuns nature of having variations throughout the skein any number of these terms my apply and 3.) These terms are used to lable Commercial yarns, and personally, I want people to know my handspun yarns do even compair to commercial yarns. So, how do you determine the weight of the handspun yarn you are thinking of buying? The last thing you want is to end up with some super chunky yarn when you where planning on knitting lace edging. Easy! The term I use for my Handspun yarns, and I see alot of other spinners using the same is what is known as WPI. WPI or wraps per inch, is a term borrowed by the hand spinning world from weaving. And, it's super easy to understand: WPI / wraps per inch = the number of times a strand of yarn can be wrapped around a one inch section of a ruler. you can purchase a tool with a one inch notch on it for this purpose from spinning and weaving dealers. but, your regular school ruler works just fine. Just hold the ruler and strand of yarn in one hand, Keeping the yarn at the beginning of a one inch section with your thumb. Then, with a consistant tension, wrap the yarn around the ruler for one inch while counting the wraps. Do this with some commercial yarns you may have to give yourself the idea of how yarns you've been knitting with compair to the WPI scale. Also, as a general rule (even though I don't like to compair) 16 WPI is approx what would be called "sport" weight yarn. If your WPI number increases the yarn is getting thinner, WPI number decreases the yarn is getting thicker. Hopefully I've helped those of you that my have been hesitant of purchasing handspun yarns because of this issue. Because handspun yarns are so fun and exciting to knit with, their variations, uniqueness, and colors that can only be found in handspun yarn.
