How to Travel With Presents

Traveling to see family members during the holiday season is stressful, but if you are traveling with gifts for your relatives that stress increases greatly. The key to reducing this stress is to know the best way to travel with presents so that all of your intended gifts arrive just the way you wish. Some presents may have to meet you there, but others can be packed in your baggage.

Items Needed:

  • Boxes, tape and other shipping supplies

  • Wrapping paper, bows and ribbon

Instructions:

  1. Mail large or fragile presents to your destination ahead of time. You can package and ship them inexpensively through UPS or FedEx, and the United States Postal Service also offers reasonable bulk shipping.

  2. Leave your gifts unwrapped and pack them in empty suitcases, especially if you are traveling by train, bus or car. You can pack clothing around the gifts to help secure and protect them as you travel. If you pack wrapped packages, you run the risk of damaging the wrapping and having to rewrap the packages later. If you are traveling by plane you must leave your gifts unwrapped in order to facilitate security clearance.

  3. Pack items in your checked baggage that you cannot take on the plane with you. These types of items include liquids and other items that are restricted during air travel. Any liquids over 3 ounces must be placed in your checked baggage instead of your carry-on baggage.

  4. Pack smaller items or expensive items in your carry-on baggage if you are flying. Make sure that these items are unwrapped so that security officials can examine them quickly without unwrapping your packages.
