I have been in the DJ business for 25 years. What is one of the most difficult job as a DJ business owner? Finding DJ's that have the same values and entertainment skills as I do. I am one of the lucky ones. I have only needed to train 1 DJ for the past 10 years. She trained for 1 1/2 years before I allowed her to work a wedding. My other DJ's have been with me for 10 to 25 years. They are all professional DJ's. They stay with Diverse Sounds because I don't pay them minimum wage. These are highly paid DJ professionals and are a very big part of making Diverse Sounds one of the most reliable experienced DJ companies in West Michigan. One of the biggest mistakes I see Brides&Grooms make, when looking for a DJ is looking for that younger DJ that they feel will know the new music. Now that may be ok if there is only going to be young people at their wedding. But, the Parents, GrandParents, aunts and uncles, family friends are probably going to want to be there to. Now they want the Top 40 played from their era. A younger DJ may not have a clue to what they want to hear. Now 1/2 or 3/4's of the crowd will be dissapionted because the DJ didn't play thier music. Weddings have a very diverse crowd and require a diverse playing list. At a wedding many different styles of music is going to be played. There will be what I call sets of music styles. There may be Oldies, then country, R&B;, or rock, but it is rare that only one style of music is played at a wedding. You probably won't hear an all Polka wedding, but maybe a few polka's mixed in with the many different styles. My theory is 3 to 4 and out. The styles of music need to change according to the crowd. Another mistake that is made when choosing a younger DJ is that after 10:00 all you hear is the currant Top 40. Now your parents and family are just sitting there watching the younger kids dance. Remember this is a celebration. Your parents don't want to be chaperones at your wedding they want to celebrate the whole night. The focus after 10:00 will be more on your music but will also include music that you and your parents and aunts and uncles can enjoy. One of the overlooked problems when choosing a younger DJ is, is he paying attention to the music or the Brides Maids? Yes this can happen, and don't be suprised. There is a lot of great music from the 40's to 2010. The veteran DJ can play all the older music but now we have the last 10 years to add to those styles. There is some great music coming out today and that only makes it easier for us. Don't get me wrong. There are some good young DJ's out there. You need to be comfortable when choosing a DJ for your wedding. But experience is the most valuable investment when choosing DJ entertainment.
