How to Get Started as a Wedding DJ

How to Choose a Wedding DJ

To choose a wedding DJ, sit down with your future spouse and identify your musical preferences. Generate a diverse list of musical eras, artists, tempos and styles that you want at your wedding before proceeding with your search for a DJ.

1. Create a list of the desired wedding music. You and your fiancé may have different tastes. Additionally, you'll want to consider the range of guests who will be present and the musical styles that will appeal to them. Ideally, your music list will appeal to the various age groups and cultures among wedding guests.

2. Consider the personality of the wedding DJ. Depending on the ambiance you are trying to create for your wedding, your DJ may be refined and sophisticated or he may be young and hip, telling jokes and trying to get everyone dancing.

3. Establish a DJ budget. Wedding DJs are usually independent contractors whose fees will vary greatly depending on their experience, their own financial needs and their geographic location. Determining your budget early on will help you to quickly screen out higher priced DJs.

4. Ask friends, relatives, coworkers and neighbors for recommendations. They may have hired a high-quality wedding DJ or recently enjoyed a DJ at a wedding they attended. Asking people who know you well will help find a suitable fit.

5. Interview several wedding DJs before deciding. Whether you run an ad in a local newspaper or find possible candidates through word of mouth, be sure to interview several DJs before making a decision.
