By Computer-Owner

Ever Lopez rescued my computer: when I got the blue screen that said "unmountable boot drive", I called Smart Techs. Ever replaced the hard drive and reloaded the operating system and software for a reasonable charge (and vacuumed inside the computer and another computer in the house that had a noisy fan). He also took the old hard drive and extracted data. The charge for data extraction, at $249, might have been a bit on the high side (though probably similar to the prices everyone else charges for data extraction). I got my money's worth, though, because he didn't charge for installing the old hard drive in an enclosure and a third home visit. Now I have full access to all my old e-mails, cookies, favorites, and program files (as well as documents). Thanks Smart Techs! ...read more

Keeping your laptop cool

Keeping your laptop cool....Keeping your laptop cool can save money and keep a stressfull situation from happening. Here are things you can do to keep your laptop cool.1: Don't place your laptop on soft places. Hard and Flat is the best surface for a laptop, not resting between you and a pillow.2: Rid your fan of debris. Use a can of compressed air and blow through the gratings to get some of the dust, dirt, hair etc out. If your laptop is under warranty we recommend not opening any panels as it will void the warranty. But if it isn't go ahead and remove the panels and blow air on the fans avoiding sensitive areas.3. Use a stand. It has extra fans to take some of the load off your laptop.4. Check&adjust; your settings.Lowering your screen’s brightness, unplugging USB-powered devices and closing idle apps that are hogging up CPU time will also help cool things down. Make sure your power-management settings are properly activated. Gamers and movie watchers, make sure your laptop can handle what your putting it through. At the same time, if your software works fine as is, don’t update it unnecessarily. The goal is to reduce your machine’s work load. If your BIOS settings were recently updated, for example, and your fan starts acting up shortly thereafter, you might try restoring them.5. Monitor the tempature. When we have a fever we try our best to lower it so that we don't case damage to ourselves. Well the same needs to be done with our systems. If you feel the palm of your hand getting warm or your lap starts to burn then it's time to shut it off and let it rest. Doing so will allow the system to cool down and start up again normally.6. Share the load.If you have a desktop and a laptop, divide your time between the two. Don’t sleep/hibernate/shutdown every other minute. If you just logged on to check your e-mail, it's better to leave it on if you're going to use in a little while instead of powering off. Your laptop and even more a "mini" can't handle as much abuse as your desktop can.Help full hints from your friends at Smart Techs Computer Repair :) ...read more
