TIPS TO STAY COOL THIS SUMMER

It’s summertime! The kiddos are out of school, we are all a bit more relaxed and the weather is sunny, hot and beautiful. Let’s think of ways to stay cool, fresh and on trend. DUPATTA REFRESH Many of us opt to wear a suit over a sari because there is less ‘fabric’ involved. When it comes time to figure out where the dupatta of the outfit should be placed, we naturally drape it over one shoulder/arm or around our necks, ends hanging down our back. Your arm and neck in these cases will cause you to heat up and sweat more, not something needed in Florida’s 90 degree temperatures. The trick is to pleat your dupatta several times into a thin strip. Pin to your suit on one shoulder evening both ends front and back. You’ll feel lighter, even. The same tip can apply if choosing a sari. Instead of always maintaining that flowy, Bollywood drape down your arm, pleat the palloo and thinly drape down the side. Depending on the length of your blouse/choli and how much you want to expose, you can take the end of the pleat and drape across to the other side of your waist and pin there. Moderate coverage success and you won’t feel suffocated! JEWEL COOL Lots of Indian jewelry can sometimes equal a hot mess, for an inside or outside event. Between bangles, tikkas, earrings, necklaces, anklets, and belly chains, you also want a mini fan hanging around your front. Here’s some help: Keep earrings long. Shorter ones will hug your ears, and eventually feel droopy. Necklaces, too, keep them longer. Choker styles will have you sweaty and sticky, especially if your hair is loose. A longer look will mostly fall on your choli or kameez. Bangles are pretty, but too many can feel congested. Wear a couple dozen on one hand or wear a thick kada or two for a more elegant and cooler vibe. Take your final look to the mirror with all your jewelry on. Now choose one or two items and remove them. Now you’re ready – with that cool, laidback summer vibe! HAIR IS THE “ICE”ING Hair down looks so pretty with Indian outfits. Loose, wavy or straight hair sets a more wholesome look. It feels hot though, you just want to take it all and stick it in a bun on top of your head sometimes! To keep the look loose but manageable, try half pinning your hair. A bobby pin on one side or pinning your crown in the center can at least keep your hair from sticking to your face. A chic ponytail or bun can also keep things cooler, especially with high neck tops and saris. Stay cool, stay hydrated and stay happy. Enjoy the summer, and, as always, remember to ‘gro with style’! TIPS TO LOOK, FEEL COOLER!

It’s hot out there, and warmer weather can make you think twice about layering on the Indian clothes at occasions versus throwing on an easy cocktail dress. Indian dressing is easy too! Ladies, with these tips and tricks, you’ll want to fancy up a bit and enjoy an event quite authentically. COOLER SHADES, BUT BLACK TOO DO aim for those pretty pastels in baby blues, pinks and beiges. They look cooler, so feel cooler. Fabrics in cotton, linen and silky georgette won’t necessarily stick to skin and vent well with even a slight breeze. A lovely sky blue sari or pink palazzo suit is oh-so-pretty! DO also aim to wear black. I know, you’re thinking, really? Why? The darkest shade of them all, it can almost feel refreshing in a sea of light hues. A linen suit in or print sari in black can formalize any event but still feel like springtime! DON’T over accessorize! Going heavy on the jewelry will weigh your look down, quite literally. Staying minimal here is the key to outfit success. DUPATTA DECISIONS DO note that heavy, ornate dupattas are being splashed all over runways, particularly with more traditional designers such as Manish Malhotra, Rohit Bal and Sabyasachi. DO decide which way you want to balance your look. A heavy dupatta with a light salwar kameez is cute. A sheer net dupatta ornated with the slightest lace embroidery or butti stonework is just enough to layer over an anarkali or straight suit. DON’T, again, overdo a perfect look. A heavy dupatta with a heavy suit will distract the eye and create a unshift. TO SLEEVE OR NOT TO SLEEVE DO go sleeveless if possible, and yes, every lady can opt for this look. A sleeveless look can actually have eye work its way from top to bottom, vertically. Flattering! DO wear long sleeves but keep them worthwhile and worth a longer look. Sheer sleeves are still in. Ruffled and bell sleeves, too, are in demand. A sari with a half ruffle sleeve but in light beige is pure balance. A churidaar suit with long pleated sheer sleeves is glamorous in a creamy shade. Yes, why not even in black. DONT wear a maroon full anarkali suit to the floor, a heavy dupatta covered in sequins, and then long sleeves with embroidery on them along with lots of jewelry and makeup. If this read can teach us everything fashion we need to know for this spring, it is to keep your look neat and minimalistic. Stay active, stay hydrated and enjoy the sun! Smile and spread the sunshine all around. And, as always, remember to ‘gro with style’! PASTELS ARE IN THIS SPRING!

Happy Easter. The weather is warmer, the sky is sunnier, and the latest looks reflect. Pastels are the color palette this spring, particularly shades in blue, pink and yellow. Follow these tips so you look like eye candy, not Easter candy! Icy, sky blues Become an ice queen! Cool blue hues are the “in” color this season. Sky blue, periwinkle, and even soft blue gray combinations are highlighting designers’ showcases throughout. A sky blue sari with gold foil work or a blue gray anarkali gown/pantsuit with silver sequins can add some extra sparkle to an occasion. To accessorize, old is gold, literally. Tradition is still in, but it’s naturally hesitating to pair baby blues with gold – we rush to match with silver ornaments. Try gold and flourish with extra élan. Bright, sunny yellows Sunny days are here and yellow is probably the IT color of the moment. Yellow strikes a mood of happy and hope, a perfect feel for springtime. A pale yellow sari with white chikankari work or a lemon yellow lengha with floral motifs or gold adornments look just lovely. Keep accessories light and minimal when showing yellow off. Matching lots of gold with the shade can be too yellow (think Easter peeps candy) and too much silver can equal too much of a distraction to the eye. Balance is key here. Springs pinks I’m surprised, honestly, to confirm that hot pink, the super bright, almost blinding kind, is so now! I have been used to the more recent subtle mauve, rose gold and baby pink hues. They’re all still in, yes, but the rani/hot pink palette is most wanted. A bright magenta lengha is beautiful. A palazzo suit in rose and hot pink combinations is glamorous. Too bold? Wear a neutral shade outfit in beige or black with hot pink accents and matching lips for some edge. Accessories (another surprise to me) are bold too, with this shade’s comeback. Large statement necklaces or earrings in gold or pearl keep the fabulousness levels high. Heels and sandals, too, are being contrasted in turquoise or orange for a pop of extra color for the spring mood! Easter time is beautiful, a time to spend with family and friends, to cherish and remain grateful for all. Spread kindness, dress lovely and, as always, remember to ‘gro with style’!
