So who exactly did you hire to DJ your important event?

So who exactly did you hire to DJ your important event? The truth is you have no idea. I’m about to give you an example of an internet ad for a DJ Company looking for DJs on the internet because they overbooked yet again during a busy season and they’ve run out of DJs. Or get this, the “good” DJs took the “good” gigs, and yours doesn’t qualify, nor does it pay as much for you to get a “good DJ”. So you get the beginner instead. Anyway, the ad says:“Top notch DJ Company is looking to fill positions. You must have a lot of energy and must be good with people. You will host and DJ events all over Colorado…blah, blah, blah.”Do you you know who they’re looking for? Well, they are hoping for someone, anyone who will accept $8.00 an hour to DJ your important event, your Prom, your Wedding, your kid's 8th Birthday so they, the DJ Company, can make more money. You ask why should it matter how much the DJ is making? Well, glad you asked. The average school Prom DJ, for example, will cost you anywhere from $600.00 to $2,500 depending on what kind of light and sound system the DJ company is providing. That is nearly all profit for the DJ Company, well, except the $24 bucks he has to pay a DJ he got for you by putting a blind ad on a random website. Do you think that DJ making $8.00 an hour will go out of their way to make sure you have a good time when they are making peanuts compared to what the DJ Company is getting? What does that new DJ have to gain, another gig for $24 bucks in a week? Also, I wonder, did the DJ company do a background check on this DJ they hired for you, not only as a precaution, but as a service to you? Can you see personal references on the DJ they are providing for you? Does theDJ Companyeven know the person they’ve hired for you? By the end of the night, you may know the DJ more than the company who hired them. By that time it may be too late. It’s scary. You have everything to lose, including your money. When you are ready to hire a name you know, a name you can trust, and a professional who has an outstanding reputation in the community, please contact me. If you have a moment, please read the testimonials on my website and see why I am the DJ for you. Thank you so much for reading my blogs. Sincerely, Rob Ryan. ...read more

Hertiage Square Kids Magic with Chad Wonder

I started to build my Heritage Square family and kids summer magic show "Unbelievable," I spent maybe 30 to 40 hours working out what I would perform, what patter I might use and how I could link the stories together. It's three different 15 to 17 minute shows with one illusion and a few parlor tricks. After 2 days of live rehearsals with my assistant, I've scrubbed a ton of what I developed because our natural chemistry created more organic moments. This is the first time I have ever used an assistant in a show and it was interesting for me to see this happen. We have another 2 weeks of rehearsals so I am excited to see how this goes! The soft opening is Memorial day weekend where I will do a more Memorial day themed show. The new illusion shows begin in mid June. ...read more

Al Lampkin inspires Chad Wonder

I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by Al Lampkin hosted by the Mile High Magicians Society. Although most of the material Al covered was better performed for adults, a couple of points he made about kids birthday parties really hit home for me. It was nice to have an affirmation of what I do. Point one. Don't smack the birthday kids in the face with gotcha' magic tricks. I perform a few sucker tricks and his remark really made me think about how I end those tricks. Do I end the trick by telling the kids "hey, you're wrong (hence not very smart)" or do I make it magical? Fortunately, my endings make it magical and comical and enhance the party. Point two. Use what birthday magic works. There is nothing wrong with performing the same show for years on end. That was great to hear considering my magic show is now 20+ years old, at least the core of it. Sure, I add in a new thing every year or so, but the core always remains the same. When I emailed Al after the lecture thanking him and letting him know how old my show as, he let me know his show was twice that old. ...read more

Thursday night performance

This Thursday the Mile High Magicians will be performing a show for the residents at the retirement center where we meet. I have a new magic routine I am going to perform, contrary to the rule of thumb... never try something new on a real audience. So why am I doing this? Well, I have a few of thoughts; First, I've practiced it quite a bit and feel comfortable with the routine. Second, I am performing to music which helps me to pace much better. Finally, I have been doing magic for 27 years. Although I will be the first to admit I am not perfect, I do know how to entertain. I would never recommend any of my students be this brave or perhaps... crazy. ...read more

6 weeks?

Your Denver magician has been busy. I was surprised when I logged and realized it's been six weeks since my last magical update. I've been averaging almost 4 shows a weekend, thank you Denver! Since I make my living doing kids magic birthday parties, it really makes a difference in my life when I'm busy. It sure makes me miss my own kids on the weekend, but I spend a lot of time with them during the week. We have panned a vacation for the end of the school year, it'll be fun to get away for a week. Gizmo the clown has a healed pinkie finger. That means he can go out on birthdays again, he is really excited. He is gearing up to take lessons from a local balloon tying legend, or at least we hope. ...read more

Clown and Out - Denver Magician loses his clown Gizmo

Denver Magician Chad Wonder (that's me) will be going it alone for a few weeks while his faithful clown Gizmo recovers from a broken pinkie. In what can only be described as "clowning around," Gizmo the clown is out or service until mid to late February, unable to tie balloons due to a broken pinkie finger.Only a clown would try to do a hand stand using only his pinkie!Someone needs to tell the clown that it's really hard, if not impossible, for the pinkie to support the weight of a human being.OK, all kidding aside, if you are planning on booking Chad Wonder and using the free clown, he will not be available to tie balloons (he can do appearances) until about mid-February.Really...Gizmois an avid basketball player and grabbed a rebound wrong... "snap," one broken pinkie. Not even a whimper all the way to the emergency care center. You know when he finally got upset? When Dad (me) told him that he wouldn't be able to do clowning for the next few weeks. His answer as his eyes welled up... "But what about the kids? We need to find another clown, we can't let down the kids." Honest, those were the first words out of his mouth. I couldn't be prouder.Chad Wonder ...read more

A couple of magical party tips

Birthday magicians will all tell you to tie a balloon or a bouquet of balloons around your mailbox or on a stake in front of your house. This makes it easier for parents trying to find your house to see it and makes it easy for me too! Also: Consider putting balloons at the turns into and through your neighborhood. Tie them the direction your guests should turn and it works miracles. No need to tape up signs and it's easy to cut them down after the party. Let the birthday child select the colors for the balloons. Kids really want to help out. Keep dogs and cats separate from the party area. You can put them in the garage or kennel, a exciting party can be too much for your pets. You don't want to set off allergies, risk a nip or stress out a child afraid of dogs. Just because you love animals, don't assume everyone else does. ...read more

Kids Birthday parties are fun

As a kids birthday magician, I have seen it all. Great kids magic parties, fun kids magic parties and even the occasional mysterious kids birthday party. But the one common thread among kids magic parties... amazing and stunning magic. As a magician, I obviously think that having a magician at your son or daughters birthday will make it one of the most memorable events in their childhood. I have two boys, and my 7 year old, who knows how a lot of my magic works (he is actually learning some tricks), still wants a magic show for his birthday. I get a request every time I show up at school by all his classmates. My kids birthday party is a huge amount of fun and that's why I feel confident you'll lvoe what I do. ...read more

Todays great show

As a kids magician, I love to meet kids. Today I had the pleasure of meeting a great kid. That said, I thought I would let everyone know what a great and a challenging kid is to me. First off, your kids is always great for you. I know my kids are the best to me, and your's better be the best to you. But I often ask myself what other people think of my kids and I shutter at how they may behave when I am not hovering over the (OK, I don't hover but you know what I mean). You should also know that even if a kid is challenging, that can be a great trait, just maybe not for a magician trying to fool him or her! Great kids a respectful, curious and interested. They don't claim to know it all, tell their friends what to do or command the attention of everyone. Honestly, there is always one kids like this at every party, rarely is it the birthday child, but on occasion it is. This is the kids who says "I know how you did that," and literally stands up during the show and interrupts it's flow... but that's not what I am writing about. This boy today asked great questions, but never pressed to far. He was really interested in the magic, wanted to know how it worked, but knew it was a line he shouldn't cross. He was amazing to his friends and all the guests (including those of his sisters). I was impressed with his maturity and his ability to lead his friends, he will be a great grown up is he keeps these qualities. He smiled the entire time, I knew he was happy and it wasn't just because it was his birthday. He was gentle when he spoke and yet everyone keyed in while he did so. He was a great sport in the tricks that made "fun" of him. It was truly a pleasure to perform for his birthday. ...read more

Waiting on Facebook

Lesson learned, never get the big guys mad at you. I was locked out of Facebook! How you ask? Simple, I disputed a charge they made to my credit card. I know your asking... what did they charge you for? Advertising. Those little side banner ads you see on the site, those are paid for by the vendors. It's actually a pretty affordable little system and certainly drives traffic to your site. I was using them to reach new customers. Well, I changed the card they were supposed to bill but apparently to close or after the cut off date for billing. The card I had on file with them is one I use for internet purchases only and it has a credit limit of $700.00 to limit my exposure if someone stole it. Needless to say, during the Christmas season, I pressed the limit but totally forgot about any possible Facebook charges until what I thought was the last minute. Well, it wasn't the last minute, it was too late, and they billed the card and put me over my limit... DO YOU KNOW WHAT that costs? Oh my goodness it's $40.00 they dock you, and your interest rate (I don't carry a balance so no big deal there) shoots from 11% or something to like 25%, it's like robbery. I tried and tried to work it out with Facebook but they disagreed to I disputed the charge... guess what Facebook does, the block your account, even if you have offered to pay with the other card you put on file. The moral of the story? None. Don't fight the power, you just lose on all fronts. I need to un-contest the charge, that the over limit hit and then I get my Facebook account back! Oh well. A $40.00 lesson. ...read more

Coming up #1 in Google for Denver Kids Magician!

Search for Denver Kids Magician or Kids Magic Denver and I come up first in Google, it's been a long journey but it appears to be paying off. When I come up first under Kids Magician and Kids Magic, then I will be really happy. Building your site to be search engine friendly is more of an art than any type of science. Sure, there are certain things you must do to make sure you show up, but preparing your content is the tricky part. You'll hit a lot of sites that use key words like all the SEO guys tell you to add, but from what I can see, that's only a temporary fix and the sites ready horrible. In order to get truly index properly, there is a lot more to it. Although I would share, I am not an expert and my advice is not worth the electronic pixels it uses. ...read more
