Idea Center: a new way to create documents on the IPad

TheIdea CenterIPAD application is designed to allow the user to capture thoughts and ideas as they occur.Any passing idea, lyric, haiku, joke, task or note can be quickly entered into the Idea Center database using an IPAD without the need for network connectivity. When the thought strikes you, take out your IPAD, start the Idea Center application, and jot your thought down before it slips away..You can take a photo and save it with just a title, or you can add a description and accompanying text.Since your idea has been captured in a database on your IPAD, you can always come back to it and flesh it out later. The Idea Center also will create a presentable format for your idea through the use of styles and categories. The application allows the user to create their own styles and categories that can be reused for consistent output.Ideas can be arranged into documents, shared between documents, or just stand on their own.  Either way, ideas and documents can be formatted into PDF files and sent to a printer or emailed to friends and colleagues.I have used this tool to write two user manuals to date.  I find the process quicker and less painful than writing manuals using Word or some other word processing software.I take the usual screen prints from the target software application and then load them onto my IPAD via ITunes.  Next, I create an idea for each captured screen print. Filling in the description, text and some useful keywords like application x, or user manual. Then I assembled the ideas into a document, using the application splash screen for the document title page.  I review the document and edit the individual ideas and then regenerate the document. When I am satisfied with the document, I email it to my clients or save it to my Imac using ITunes. ...read more

Replacing a Hard Drive

Over time you may have noticed your computer takes longer to boot up, and your explorer takes longer to browse files. The most common reaction is to purchase some software that promises to speed up your computer by cleaning up your registry. This action will most likely help with your computer speed, but you may still be disappointed.  Part of the problem could be hard drive failure, lack of free space on your hard drive, or both. An easy way to check on the health of you hard drive is to check the system events on the event viewer application  on your PC.   This application can be accessed from the Administrative Tools menu on your control panel.  Check for Hard Drive errors like the picture below: Note that the error source is listed as disk. Seeing these errors should alert you that it is time to replace your hard drive. The Event is listed as 7.  Most people, including myself, would not know what an event code of 7 signified. Fortunately, you can double-click on the event to see more detail. The details are shown in the picture below: The details tell me that the event is a Bad Block haas been detected.  My event viewer shows a whole slew of these events.  Obviously, I have a disk drive in trouble. Fortunately for me, the disk in question is my secondary hard drive, disk D:  This is fortunate because all of the operating system and most of my applications are loaded onto the C drive. If I had to replace the C drive, I would most likely need to reinstall the operating system, device drivers, and all of my applications; not an endeavor I would undertake lightly. Since I am not a hardware expert, I contacted a local PC repair company, Able Computer services to replace my ailing drive.  My computer is six years old, so drive technology had progressed some.  We were able to order a larger hard drive to replace my troublesome back up drive.  Part of my problem also stemmed from having a nearly maxed out hard drive. Able came to my place of business to replace the hard drive on a Saturday.  He opened up my computer chassis and wired in the new drive temporarily while we copied the files from my old drive to the new drive.  This took a lot longer than we had anticipated, so we had to continue on Sunday. With all of my data copied over, my old drive was removed, the new drive installed in its place and the PC was returned to service. I had wanted to keep my old drive and use it as a third drive in my PC.  I could reformat the old hard drive and then reuse it.  Formatting the hard drive will mark the bad blocks so they are not used again if you specify a full format.  Alas, the Dell chassis was not configured for a third hard drive.  Able suggested I order an external hard drive enclosure.  We went to http://www.newegg.com an ordered one, A Thermaltake 3.5" SATA drive enclosure.  I got the model which would take two hard drives, since it was not any more expensive. I got the enclosure a few days later and plugged it into a USB port on my computer.  The drive just slides into the slot in the enclosure.  The whole thing resembles a slice of bread in a two slice toaster.  My computer recognized the drive with no problems.  I was able to reformat my drive and now i not only have the extra capacity from buying a bigger replacement drive (from 110GB to 500GB) I was also able to reuse nearly all of the space on my original hard drive. ...read more
