Arctic Insurance Services (A Horace Mann Agency)

This agency had about the worst service I have ever had compared to any other business. My phone calls were seldom returned. I was told my policy would actually not cover my homes and so I tried to change the policy 2x with them, and both times the lady I was working with either got fired or quit and no one contacted me to continue working the policy changes. So, I continued to pay money for a policy that they would not pay out on if anything happened. Do not use this company if you want either of the following: 1. Service 2. An Insurance policy that is actually valid. Luckily I never had a claim with them. ...read more

Why Disability Insurance is more important than ever.

Experts believe Long Term Disability coverage can be even more critical than life insurance, especially for young, single workers. It can provide workers income in case they're forced to stop working. Yet, too many Americans are underinsured or not insured at all because of the myth that they are unlikely to become disabled. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), at age 35, people have a 45% chance of being disabled for 90 days or longer before their 65th birthday. And among those over 65, there's a 70% chance of being disabled for another two years. Here's the who, what and how of long-term disability plans. How do you buy it? Businesses with 50 or more workers tend to sponsor some sort of a plan that¹s either 100 percent or partly paid for by the employer. How much will it cost? That depends largely on the type of disability insurance. If it is a group plan, the III's survey found the average annual premium to be roughly $218 per year. That's less than $20 per month. A general rule of thumb is a half a percent of payroll. So, if one earns $50,000 a year, the insurance premium would be around $250 a year. For individual plans, the cost is significantly higher and is based on a person's age, health and life-style. What's the payout? Generally, group policies pay up to 60-67 percent of your annual income. There may be a monthly cap, as well. Furthermore, if the employee pays the entire premium, the payout is not taxed. If the employer helps to pay for the plan, the payout is taxed. Individual plans, meantime, more popular with high net-worth individuals, tend to have no caps on payout. So, someone earning $100,000 base salary with a $400,000 annual bonus is better off getting an individual disability insurance since it may take into account the person's total earnings and better compensates them in case of an emergency. Alaska Employee Benefit Specialists can work on your behalf to develop disability plans for you and your employees. Contact David Kaufman at (907) 272-9287 for additional information. ...read more
