How to Compare Insurance Companies

Insurance is a necessary evil, but it does not have to seem like an impossible task to find the right policy. By spending a little more time in the information gathering phase, you can make sure that you have all the facts you need to make the right decision.

  1. Make a full list of all the insurance companies that offer service in your area. Not every company is licensed to sell insurance in every state, so check that information first.

  2. Determine what type of coverage you want. If you are looking for automobile insurance, for example, you can opt to go with your state's minimum requirements or you can purchase additional coverage for a higher rate. If you are looking for home or renter's insurance, check into the different types of coverage available.

  3. Call each insurance company that offers the types of coverage you want to purchase and obtain a quote. Insurance companies are happy to provide a quote at no charge and with no obligation. Some will even match or beat other quotes, so be sure to ask. You do not need to make a decision while you are on the call. If a company tries to pressure you for a decision during the call, they are probably not the right provider for you.

  4. Set aside some time to objectively look at all of the quotes you have obtained. Remember to look at the cost of the policy, but also compare the coverage amounts. One quote may look better because it is less expensive, but the coverage may provide less than the other policy, thereby making it a far worse deal.
