Dog Pee Killing Your Grass? How to protect & repair your lawn

Dog Pee Killing Your Grass?  For the Full Article Visit:  http://alaskapremierservices.com/dog-urine-burning-lawn/ Dog Pee Killing Your Grass?  Protecting Your Lawn From Man’s Best FriendDoggonit, we can’t forget about Fido! Alaskans love their dogs and love to see them run free in their open yards. Unfortunately, Fido also loves to let his urine run free on your grassy lawn causing urine burn spots.  Below you’ll learn why Dog pee can often times burn or kill your grass along with a few tips to keep your lawn damage free from your fury friend. Why Does Dog Pee Burn or Kill Grass? You’ll find that many people believe that Dogs urine is acidic and ‘burns’ the grass.  This is why many home remedies have arisen to change the pH of the urine. These remedies rarely work though, because Dogs pee actually burns the grass due to its high Nitrogen content.Dogs eat a high level of protein in their diet, they break the protein down and excrete it as nitrogen in the urine.  It often kills the grass because of the extremely high amount of nitrogen. Its the same type of burn that can be caused when too much fertilizer is dropped in one spot. These urine burns will typically have a characteristic dark green ring around the outside edge where the urine was diluted enough to work as a fertilizer.  Urine BurnsHere are some tips to prevent the burnt spots from happening in the first place:Increase Water Intake to Dilute Urine-  Adding water to your dog’s food or adding non-salted broth to the drinking water may helpHigh Quality Dog Food-  The protein is often times more digestibleDiluting the Urine Immediately with Water- You’ll have to be at the ready with a hoseWatering Your Yard Daily-  Helps in some cases but it may not be enough&may also cause your grass to grow shallow rootsTrain Your Dog to Pee in Just One Spot in The Yard-  This may be the most practical tip, long-termSupplements-  These seem to be hit or miss & many times are not effective.  Have you found one that works?  I’d love your feedback! How To Fix Burnt Spots In Your LawnRemove dead grassApply a layer of Dirt/Compost Mix.  Add grass seed & rake it into the soil along with a small amount of “Starter Fertilizer”Add a Top-Dress- A thin layer of no more than ¼ inch. Just enough to shade the seed from the direct sun & to hold moisture.Tamp down soil lightlyWater the seeded area.  Keep the seeded area moist at all times for at least three weeks.Grass seed typically sprouts in 7-10 days & will be ready to mow in 3-4 weeks   Have any tricks to prevent your dog’s pee from burning your lawn?I’d love to hear your feedback! Related Lawn ArticlesEdging Your LawnAerating Your LawnOverseeding & Aerating-  Why Do Both?Dog Waste Removal ServicePrepare Plants for Nitrogen Rich Soil Follow Alaska Premier Services on the following Sites:  Connect with Mike on Google+or Alaska Premier Services on Google+ Alaska Premier ServicesAnchorage Lawn Mowing,  Snow Plowing & Janitorial Services 8200 Henry CirAnchorage,AKPhone: 907-887-4545http://AlaskaPremierServices.comLike this:Like Loading...Posted in  Lawn Care- AnchorageServices- Alaska Premier ServicesTags: Anchorage, Dog Pee, lawn care ...read more

Overseeding & Aerating Your Lawn- Why Do Both?

Overseeding&Aerating Your Lawn- Find the Full article at: http://alaskapremierservices.com/overseeding-aerating/ Overseeding & Aerating Your Lawn- Why Do Both?   What is Overseeding?  Overseeding is sowing seed into your existing lawn without having to re-seed the entire lawn, and is much less expensive. If you have proper drainage, but have thin or weak spots its time to take action. What is Aeration? Core Aeration is the process of taking out deep plugs of soil using a machine called a “Core Aerator”.  This gives the soil “room to breathe”.  Soil can become hard and compacted over time which negatively affects how nutrients and water are absorbed by the grass roots. Want to learn more about Aerating?  Check out our “Aeration Article“ What Time of Year Should I Overseed My Lawn? For cool season grasses such as those in Anchorage:  Summer to fall.  Why Overseed After Aerating? This is the perfect time! Plugs of dirt are left on top of your lawn immediately after your lawn is aerated. The holes from aerating are 4 to 6 inches deep & make for the perfect environment for new seed growth.  In addition to the grass seed germinating in these holes, they will also germinate directly on the dirt cores, which then break down over the next week+.  You should ultimately over seed within a day of aeration while the holes are open and before cores begin to break down.  How often do I water after Overseeding? Water thoroughly daily for 2 to 3 weeks until grass seedlings are at least 2 inches tall. Then every two days thereafter, if weather is dry. Don’t Have the Time? Alaska Premier Services would love to take this task off your hands, leaving you with a beautiful lush and much thicker lawn. Aeration is going on right now, so sign up today for the duel service of both Aeration & Overseeding. Our aeration promo is $95 but for the two service combo:  $185.      Call Alaska Premier Services at 907-887-4545 or click the “Sign Up Now” button below & we’ll add you to our schedule.   We’d LOVE to make your lawn “the talk of your neighbors”!   July Aerating Plus Overseeding Promotion! $185 Flat Rate* Related articles Lawn Aeration- FAQ Ways To Aerate Your Lawn  Connect with Mike on Google+or Alaska Premier Services on Google+ Alaska Premier ServicesAnchorage Lawn Care,  Aerating & Dethatching 8200 Henry CirAnchorage,AKPhone: 907-887-4545http://AlaskaPremierServices.com  ...read more
