What is Homeopathy?

The principles of homeopathy were developed by Samuel Hahnemann, a German medical doctor in the late 18th century. He became dissatisfied with the toxic effects of certain drugs and disillusioned with ineffective and often barbaric treatments of the day. He resolved in finding a safer way of curing patients, and thus became the founder of homeopathy. Homeopathy is known to be a safe and effective method of healing used by millions of people worldwide for more than 200 years. Homeopaths treat people with remedies to stimulate the body’s own natural healing powers and defense mechanisms.  The National Center for Homeopathy (www.nationalcenterforhomeopathy.org) defines Homeopathy simply as a system of medicine that is based on the Law of Similars.    The law of similars can be easily understood. The Greek roots to the name homeopathy are homoios meaning ‘similar’ and pathos meaning ‘suffering’. Natural substances that produce similar symptoms in a healthy person can be used to heal those same symptoms in an ill person. In other words, what a substance can cause, it can cure.   For example; coffee can cause wakefulness and alertness. In homeopathy, coffee used as a remedy in potentized form can cure people with the same kind of insomnia coupled with an excessively alert mind.  Another example; when we slice an onion the eyes begin to burn, the tears come, our nose runs and there may be a burning sensation in the throat. Sometimes with respiratory allergies, including hay fever, symptoms such as itchy watery eyes, burning sensation and a clear runny nose are experienced similar to that of slicing an onion. In this example the remedy Allium cepa, made from the red onion can provide relief.  Homeopaths seek to understand each client, holistically in order to perceive what is going on mentally and emotionally as well as physically. Everyone experiences and expresses their disease in a very individual and unique manner and that is why we treat the individual person as a whole and not the disease or specific body parts. The expressions of our disease through symptoms, physical, mental and emotional tell us what the body needs to restore itself to health. In addition to the law of similars, other important principles include totality of characteristic symptoms, single remedy and minimum dose.  The totality of characteristic symptoms is a beautifully broad idea yet is not meant to be a haphazard mixture of all symptoms; it is more of an individualizing characteristic set of the symptom complex so that it can point to the remedy with a similar symptom picture.  The use of a single remedy means giving one remedy at a time. Two or more remedies are not mixed together in classical homeopathy.  The remedy selection is given in very minute doses under the minimum dose principle. The minute dose means the remedy produces the least possible excitation of the vital energy and yet sufficient to effect the necessary change. The quantity is minimum, yet strength is appropriate for a gentle curative effect. The minimum dose is possible due to the discovery of the potentization process of substances to make remedies. Remedies are prepared by homeopathic pharmacies from plants, mineral or animal substances found in nature. The original substances are diluted in liquid repeatedly and succussed (vigorously shaken) in a standardized method called potentization which is the hallmark of all homeopathic remedies. Through the process of potentization we are able to dispense remedies in different strengths called potencies. Because the remedies are potentized and devoid of chemical toxicity, they are extremely safe, yet when homeopathically indicated, potentized remedies retain their ability to heal people of all ages. Finally, the principles are applied in a number of ways that can be tailored to suit a wide variety of conditions to heal and relieve suffering. The ways of adapting and applying the principles have progressed and changed to some extent as the techniques of remedy selection have developed, yet homeopathy is essentially the same today that it was two hundred years ago. The cement or foundation of homeopathy remains true and is preserved, passed on and perpetuated by homeopaths and those they serve to stimulate healing of body and mind gently and naturally. by Chris Tash, Classical Homeopath visit www.WallaWallaHomeopathy.com ...read more
