Amazing Nails

Pedicure was ok, ruined my nails with a weird gel soak off. I asked to maintain my nail length and she filed them all down, one middle finger is extremely short and they are all filed slanted. They also do not speak English, even the basics so one woman had to do all the translating. I will never go back. ...read more

Are all nail salons the same?

In the 22 years I have done nails I have seen some botched up and horrific nail services done on clients simply because they made the mistake of selecting a nail salon based on price only. There are a lot of nail salons offering deals for full sets and fills but when you walk in not always will you walk out paying those deals. These nail salons get you in the door with a super deal but when you sit down things begin to add up quickly, some if not all of these salons charge for every little thing and for me that would put a bad taste in my mouth right from the get go. It would also make me question other nail salons, are they all the same? And then there is the question of their products which are not up to the highest standards. As a veteran nail tech I would never use their products and I strive to educate every new client on the dangers of this product called Methyl Methacrylate or MMA for short. Why should MMA not be used in any nail salon? 1. MMA nail products do not adhere well to the nail plate. To make these products adhere, nail technicians often shred up (etch) the surface of the nail. This thins the nail plate and makes it weaker. 2. MMA creates the hardest and most rigid nail enhancements, which makes them very difficult to break. When jammed or caught, the overly filed and thinned natural nail plate will often break before the MMA enhancement, leading to serious nail damage. 3. MMA is extremely difficult to remove. Since it will not dissolve in product removers, it is usually pried from the nail plate, creating still more damage. 4. The FDA says don't use it! This is clearly the most important reason. The FDA bases their prohibition on the large number of consumer complaints resulting from the use of MMA nail enhancements in the late 70's and they continue to maintain this position today. For these reasons, the Nail Manufacturers Council and the American Beauty Association have also taken a stance against the use of MMA liquid monomer as an ingredient in artificial nail liquids. Not because MMA is toxic, but because it is an unsuitable ingredient. MMA is a widely used monomer with a long history of safe use in medical and dental products. It is fine for making bulletproof windows and shatterproof eyeglasses. However, we as responsible nails techs believe that artificial nails should not only be beautiful, they should not damage the natural nail. They are enhancements, not replacements! Please, if you want your nails done, get them done right the first time. Don't go looking for the most inexpensive salon but rather go looking for the most educated nail tech, the nail tech that has your best interest at heart instead of just your wallet. Ask your friends where they get their nails done. Or, call some salons from the phone book and ask questions about their product and ask how long they have been in the business. Most importantly check them out on the BBB. I can't stress that enough. I never hire someone to work on my car or home without first looking to see if they are reported on the BBB. If they are reported and it is bad I don't use them. Why would you let just anyone work on your nails, those beautiful fingers that are a part of your body? Another important issue is, are they licensed? When you walk into a nail salon look for THEIR license make sure that the person that is working on you has a picture of them on the license so that you know for sure they are legally able to work on you. Would you let a doctor work on you if he didn't have a license? To many nail salons are running off another nail tech's license. This IS illegal! If you don't see their license, ask them to show you. If they can't cough one up, leave. And last but not least, are they clean? I don't care about dust on the floor or surrounding the table, dust just happens and it is hard to keep it at bay. I am not concerned about nail clipping on the floor because you aren't getting your nails done on the floor. Although I do sweep the floor after every person as I like a clean room. No, I am not worried about those things but because nail salons might look clean from the outside, deep within the nail tech's table is where the dirt hides. What I mean is, are they using a clean file on you, just for you? Or do they pick up a file from off the table and use it on you? Do they put their implements into a sanitizing jar or do they just hang it off the side of the rim? Do they use a clean brush on you? Is the table sanitized, and is a clean paper towel laid down for you? Do they have sanitizer wash at the table? In the end "Are all nail salons the same" my answer to you would be NO they aren't and thank goodness for that. ...read more
