Seeable Lumens – Light That The Eye Can See

"Seeable Lumens" measure the Full Spectrum, which is both photopic (yellow light) seen by the cones, and scotopic (blue light) seen by the rods of the eyes. When selecting fluorescent& compact fluorescent or CFL light bulbs and other color sensitive lamps, you will want to consider the CRI (Color Rendering Index), Kelvin/Color Temperature and "Seeable Lumens" output. Understanding these key terms and reviewing thisSeeable Lumens Table will help you determine which lamp type will best meet your needs.  But first, lets review a few Key terms that you will need to know. Color Rendering Index (CRI)is a percentage of measurement ofhow closely an artificial light source approximates natural sunlightwhen the sun is emitting a particular color temperature known as Kelvin. For example, the Spectra-COLWITE T8 fluorescent lamps have a CRI of 75 at 4150Kelvin and the VITALUX T8 Full Spectrum fluorescent lamps have a CRI of 94 at 5400 Kelvin and natural sunlight has a CRI of 100 at any Kelvin. The higher the CRI the closer the lamp color matches the sun at that Kevlin temperature, providing more true-to-life colors.  Maintenance Engineering's balanced spectrum and full spectrum lamps closely match natural sunlighthigher Kelvin temperatures increasing see-ability and visual comfort for your eyes. Kelvin/Color Temperature -This refers to thequality of light emanating from a light sourceand is represented by the number of degrees Kelvin based on the Kelvin Color Temperature Scale. Outside light varies from 2800K to 6500K, depending on season, time of day, latitude, and weather. The higher the color temperature of a fluorescent lamp, the "bluer" it's appearance, the lower the color temperature, the "redder" it's appearance.   See Kelvin Temperature Chart below. Lumens– This refers to theamount of light emitted from a light sourceas measured by a light meter developed in the 1920′s to measure incandescent light. * LIGHT METER LUMENS – STANDARD LIGHT METER READINGS.This is thelight seen predominately by the cone receptors in the eye, which sense the yellow light of the photopic spectrum.  This method of light measurement was developed in 1924 and was generally used to measure incandescent lighting.  Even though this type of measurement is inaccurate, it is still widely used in the lighting industry today. The typical light meter are most sensitive to the yellow-green part of the color band. This is the light that is seen by the cone receptors in the eye and is called the "photopic lumens". However, the rod receptors in the eye also receive light but it is the light rich in the blue portion of the spectrum. This light isn't measured by the typical light meter. The combination of the light received by the rods and cones is called the "seeable lumens".Therefore, the photopic lumens could be misleading when comparing different colors of light. Even though a similar lumen reading is obtained with a full spectrum bulb vs. and cool white bulb, the full spectrum bulb will produce more seeable light. For example, M.E.'s F40T12 4FT fluorescent Spectra-COLWITE light bulb will have 2850 photopic lumens and 4055 seeable lumens, whereas the  F40T12 4FT fluorescent XTRABRITE ALPINEWITE will have 3700 photopic lumens and 6050 seeable lumens. **SEEABLE LUMENS – LIGHT THAT THE EYE CAN SEE.A new method of measuring lightwas developed by Lawrence Berkeley Labs, Berkeley CA in 1992.  Maintenance Engineering uses this new and more accurate method to measure called "Seeable Lumens." Seeable Lumens measure the full spectrum, which is both photopic (yellow light) seen by the cones, and scotopic (blue light) seen by the rods of the eye."Seeable Lumens" give us amore accurate measurement of the usable light given off by a lamp. "Seeable Lumens" give us A More Accurate Measurement of the Usable Light given off by a lamp. ...read more

Cold Weather Affects Lighting

With the colder weather making its presence known, we have some tips to share with you to insure you get the best performance out of your lighting this winter. HID Lamps  With good lamps, ballasts and igniters, most HID lamps should operate reliably down to -20 degrees F.  Slow starting could indicate a failing HID lamp or ballast. Incandescent Lamps  These create their own heat, so they always work, even in extremely cold weather.  However, sudden tempature changes can lead to thermal shock, leading to breakage.  If you have a concern for this happening,  you could use Shatter Guard Coated lamps.  For spot heating, our Infrared Reflector lamps are perfect. Energy Saving Ballasts  Most all of M.E.'s ballasts are designed for normal, indoor temperatures.  Minimum starting temps vary for specific ballasts.  If you need cold weather rated ballasts, contact us to determine what will work best for your situation.   Fluorescent Lamps Standard wattage Rapid Start and Instant Start lamps are good for temperatures above 40-50 degrees F.  Energy saving versions are very sensative to cooler temps and shouldn't be used below 60 degrees F.  HO and VHO lamps are the best for cold locations; with the right ballasts, they will start below 0 degrees F. Arm-A-Lite Sleeves A way to protect fluorescent lamps from the cold is to slip on Arm-A-Lite Sleeves.  These insulate the lamp from the cold and hold the lamp's heat inside.  In the North Country, where fluorescents are used in outside applications, we put sleeves on our lamps in the fall and take them off in the spring.  Colored sleeves can also add a festive touch for the holidays. Lumi-Twists M.E. recommends these units for normal room tempatures, but they are rated for operation as low as -5 degrees F. for the PAR Lumi-Twists, with our regular Lumi-Twists rated for 5 degrees F..  Hard starting caused be extreme cold temperatures can shorten life.  In southern climates, plug-in CFL's have been used in outside fixture location, prevailing winds, and average temperatures can help keep the lamp warm enough.  You may wish to experiment with a couple of Lumi-Twists to see if your cold applications can be upgraded to compact fluorescent lamps. Energy Conservation With The Lights On

M.E.'s New Energy-Efficient Products Promotion Reprint from "Energy Savings Product Booklet" ME 8042 Rev. 05/18/07 Maintenance Engineering has developed an energy-efficient line of lighting that cuts energy bills while providing improved, more seeable light. As our nation's economy grows, so does the need for energy…and for energy-efficient lighting. M.E. products allow consumers to do their part in energy conservation without reducing the "seeability" as normally associated with reducing lamps or fixtures. ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING Maintenance Engineering carries a full line of energy-efficient products, from incandescents that save 21% in electricity, to fluorescents that save 44% when coupled with M.E.'s new electronic ballasts. We offer a new "screw-in" fluorescent lamp, designed to replace the old 100w incandescent, cuts power usage a whopping 80% to 20w. We also offer a new LED exit lamp replacement that cuts power by 95%, to an insignificant 2.4 watts per exit fixture. IMPROVED SEEABILITY Maintenance Engineering has also focused on improving the quality of the light produced by its lamps. Research has shown that greater reductions in energy for lighting can be made when designed with a complimentary improvement in light quality. To save energy at the expense of seeing defeats the obvious purpose of lighting. Two of our most dramatic achievements have been the introduction of our XTRABRITE Fluorescent that produces 69% more seeable light, while saving 26% in energy when used with M.E.'s electronic ballast package, and the screw-in fluorescent that produces 40% more seeable light while saving 80% in energy. PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVED / ENERGY SAVED As people age, their need for light increases. A person in their late 50's needs 2-3 times more light than a 20-year old. As our "baby boomer" workforce ages, the need for quality light increases. M.E.'s twofold solution of combining improved light quality with energy saving designs solves the two greatest problems facing lighting engineers. By using lamps that produce more "seeable" light, workers make fewer errors and can work faster, more efficiently, and more productively. All this while using less of this nation's precious resource, our energy supply. THE LOGICAL CHOICE The best choices for lighting are products that provide energy savings and improve the quality of the light, too. Maintenance Engineering carries the industry's most complete and longest-lasting line of energy-saving, improved-quality lighting. ...read more
