How to Recalibrate Paper Shredders

How to Lubricate Paper Shredders

Oiling your paper shredder keeps the moving parts in good working order so that your shredder does not fail when you need it most. Be sure to keep your fingers away from the sharp blades, and always be sure to unplug your paper shredder before performing any maintenance on it.

  1. Unplug your paper shredder. This keeps the shredder from accidentally turning itself on while you are oiling it.

  2. Empty the paper shredder's catch bin. Also make sure to remove any paper pieces from the blades or in the feeder slot.

  3. Use only oil that is specially formulated for use in paper shredders. You can find this oil in any office supply store. Press the sides of the oil bottle lightly, and move the bottle along the feeder slot opening while you spray a steady stream of oil into the shredder.

  4. Reassemble the shredder and plug it into a wall outlet. Run the shredder for five to 10 seconds to work the oil through the shredder mechanism. If it has been a long time since you have oiled your paper shredder, unplug the shredder and repeat the oil process. Then reassemble it and run it for another five to 10 seconds.

  5. Shred two to three pieces of paper in your paper shredder. This helps to remove any leftover shredder oil that is still in the mechanism. If you use your paper shredder often, you should oil it once or twice per week. If you do not use your paper shredder as often, you should oil it at least twice a month.
