Why Self Popping Doesn't Work

Lots of people click their own necks! Sometimes it is for relief, sometimes for dramatic effect, sometimes just because they can, and often it can happen without trying. But...... what is the difference between clicking it yourself versus a Chiropractor doing it? The need to pop your own neck is a sign of a possible underlying problem. This urge can be due to multiple issues but most often it comes down to poor posture and the stress that can place on the ligaments and structures of the spine causing the joints to become restricted and uncomfortable and over time can cause irritation and pinching on a nerve. When you pop and click your own neck you are mostly popping the healthy joint that is already moving anyway, which in turn, can cause the stuck joint below it to lock in more. This is why self-poppers tend to need to do it more often as time goes on and the cause is not addressed. Chiropractors train over 4-5 years to adjust the right joint in the right way (see picture below). This relieves the restricted joint and frees up any trapped nerves and allows the hypermobile (too much movement) joints to stabilize. What is wrong with clicking my own neck? Yes, it is likely you are popping the wrong joints. This is not a good idea with your brain stem and spinal cord being right underneath. You may hear the same ‘popping’ noise (which is essentially air being released from the joint) as a Chiropractic adjustment; it can even bring you some relief, but it can cause damage. When a joint is stuck or restricted, the joints above and below work harder to compensate for the lack of movement in the stiff joint. These joints are already moving too much and the self-popping makes them move even more. Over time this can cause the ligaments to stretch, the joints to shift out of place and wear the discs and the joints that can lead to many other problems. I always click my own neck, what should I do? Recognize that this is a sign of a potential underlying problem. The first step is to determine if your posture is putting unnecessary stress on your skeletal structure. The next step is to have a full examination with a Chiropractor to assess the cause and possible solutions of your problem. Once you're properly evaluated the Chiropractor will be able to recommend stretches, give postural advice, and even a specific Chiropractic adjustment to restore the normal movement to the joints. If you think that you may have a problem, we have a great special for you to try. Normally an exam and the appropriate x-rays to determine if there is a problem can range from $90-$250. This is a significant expense just to see if there IS a problem. We will make this easier for you! Call 972-966-3333 or visit www.healthsourceofhighlandvillage.com and mention the "Got Pain" promotion when you come to the office. Your consult, exam, x-ray and full report of findings will be done for only $17! No more excuses! No more procrastinating! Start this year off in the best way! ...read more
