It Won’t Happen Here!

Have you ever heard the adage, "It won't happen here, so why fret my pet?"  Most of us know that anything is possible but we think that it won't happen where we live.  But it can! Those most at risk in a disaster are the elderly and disabled. If you are caring for your parents or another relative and have a plan in place – now is the time to get started. Some examples mentioned on the FEMA website include:• Making a family emergency plan• Having an emergency kit• Creating a support group – who knows your plan• Keeping extra medication and copies of important documents• Including pets in your planRead more athttp://1.usa.gov/hmbBO5The following is a list to help you determine what to include in your disaster supply kit to meet your family's needs.  Obviously, not all of these items will need to be in your kit. You should review the list; pick out what you think would apply to you and your family and prepare the kit.Remember – it can happen anywhere.  Be prepared.Water– at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 daysFood– at least enough for 3 to 7 days— non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices— foods for infants or the elderly— snack foods— non-electric can opener— cooking tools / fuel— paper plates / plastic utensilsBlankets / Pillows, etc.Clothing– seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoesFirst Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription DrugsSpecial Items– for babies and the elderlyToiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipesFlashlight / BatteriesRadio –Battery operated and NOAA weather radioTelephones –Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone setCash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards– Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periodsKeysToys, Books and GamesImportant documents– in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag— insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.Tools– keep a set with you during the stormVehicle fuel tanks filledPet care items— proper identification / immunization records / medications— ample supply of food and water— a carrier or cage— muzzle and leash ...read more

How might technology help family caregivers?

According to a new survey from the National Alliance for Caregiving and United Health Care, more than two-thirds of family caregivers who have used some form of technology to help them with caregiving say that web-based and mobile technologies designed to facilitate caregiving would be helpful to them. All of the caregivers who participated in the survey indicated that they have used the Internet or other related technologies to help them provide care. Not surprisingly, searching the Internet for information or support related to the caregiving was cited most often (70 percent of survey respondents).Based on the online responses of 1000 technology-using family caregivers, the report looks at their interest and perceived barriers to 12 different categories of technology that could help with caregiving activities:Personal health record trackingfor storing care recipient's information online, allowing for password-protected access 24/7, anywhere there is Internet access.Video phone systemfor real time visual interaction even across long distances.Caregiver training simulationssuch as online videos to learn specific skills (e.g., transferring from bed to chair)Online caregiving coordination systemsto request and accept help from othersSymptom monitoring and transmissionto track blood pressure, pulse, weight, blood sugar, etc.Interactive system for care recipient's entertainment(e.g., a Wii)An online display of local transportation optionsA caregiver mentor-matching serviceA passive movement monitoring systemA caregiving decision support toolCaregiver coaching softwareMedication support systemGo to the National Alliance for Caregiving for the full reportwww.caregiving.org ...read more
