How to Start a Clothes Drive

Collecting clothes can be a challenge if you have never done it before. Clothes collected can really benefit families in need.  With a little organization, time and effort, you could be investing in a clothing drive that will make a difference in the lives of many people. Learn the proper method to start a clothes drive to ensure donations and a successful drive.

  1. Contact local food pantries, shelters and other non-for-profit organizations.  Find out what types of clothing they need.  Some facilities may need baby clothes, while other shelters need coats and jackets.

  2. Ask the non-for-profit organization if they would be willing to accept donations from your clothes drive.  Usually, organizations are more than willing to accept donations; however, if they cannot, ask for a referral to another organization. Make sure you have somewhere to take the clothing you collect before starting a clothes drive.

  3. Set a time and schedule for collecting clothing in your community.  You may be able to have a drop-off location or you may prefer to pick up donations.  This will depend solely upon your schedule.  You should set aside a weekend or week to collect clothing.

  4. Call local churches, schools and community groups.   They may have tips and ideas for your clothes drives. These organizations also have volunteers who may be willing to help pass our flyers and collect clothes.

  5. Tell as many people throughout your community about your clothes drive.  Place flyers on community bulletin boards; ask the local newspaper to run an ad (many times they will do this for free if it is for charity).  Get schools involved by asking teachers, staff and students to donate clothes for your drive.  Place an ad on Craigslist or create an Event on Facebook.

  6. Collect the clothing as scheduled and deliver it to the facility in need.  Know that your efforts have helped improve the lives of many people.
