If your website is not "optimized" for the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) it will very difficult to become indexed properly and you may never get the kind of search traffic you need. There are 4 specific tweaks that every website should do but 95% of all of them don't! The first optimization is to make sure you main "keyword" (the word most likely to equal your business offering) is included in the URL (your www.address.com). It does not have to be the URL itself but a different page or subdirectory on your website works. The second optimization is setting the headline of your site as a "Header H1" tag. H1 tags tell the engines that this word is the most important tracking word about your business. The 3rd optimzation is the description "meta" tag in your website set up should contain your main keyword also. Don't over do this and pack the meta tag full of words. The engines will de-rate your site as spammy. Finally, the last optimization is the "title" of the page. This may seem obvious but most web designs do not include keywords in the title. Bill's Smoky BBQ is not a good title, description or tag in the eyes of the search engines. Many other factors play into the placement and traffic for your website but following these 4 tips will put you ahead of most any other local business in your area.
