Dryer Vent Safety

"The appliance repairman told me to get my dryer vent line cleaned."  I've heard this alot over the years, especially after the customer has already paid for a new heating element since the first one burned itself out.  When you dryer vent line is clogged, at the least your dryer beomes less efficient.  Or the other end of the spectrum, you have a costly house fire.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, the following safety tips should be followed; * Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional. * Do not use the dryer without a lint filter. * Make sure you clean the lint filter before or aftereach load of laundry.* Remove lint that has collected around the drum. * Rigid or flexible metal venting material should beused to sustain proper air flow and drying time. * Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restrictedand the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than normal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you. * Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryersshould be inspected by a professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks. * Make sure the right plug and outlet are used andthat the machine is connected properly. * Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructionsand don’t overload your dryer.*Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.DUCTZ of Charleston can help you with the annual cleaning, repairs or new installation of dryer vent lines.  Call us today at 843-771-2908. For added peace of mind, have the LintAlert Safety Monitor installed to warn you when your dryer vent requires attention. ...read more

DUCTZ of Charleston Goes to Sea...Sort Of

DUCTZ of Charleston had the opportunity and privilege to clean the ventilation and exhaust systems in the housing area aboard the USNS Red Cloud, completing the project on Sunday, January 22nd.  This was the first ship and single largest project to date accomplished this DUCTZ franchise.  It couldn't have been done without assistance from fellow franchise owners; Karl Nilsen, DUCTZ of Spartanburg, Jeff Poore, DUCTZ of Anderson/Greenwood, Wade Patterson, DUCTZ of Asheville and Tim Mozely, DUCTZ of Greater Columbia. The USNS Red Cloud is a large, medium-speed, roll-on/roll-off ship, named after Army Corporal Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., a Medal of Honor Recipient who was fatally wounded near Chloghyon, Korea.  His heroic actions prevented his company from being overrun by Chinese Communist forces on November 5th, 1950. The 6-day project encompassed 5 levels ranging from the bridge to crew quarters and offices.  It was a busy time for DUCTZ personnel and the ship as well, as they were prepping for their mission...which means we had to be on schedule!  The busy crew was very accommodating to us considering they had their own work to do, off-watch personnel sleeping and just the normal interruption of working in relatively confined spaces.  Must have made a decent impression because we were pretty much ordered to eat dinner in the mess hall the night before we finished!  Calm winds and following seas to the crew of the USNS Red Cloud! What can DUCTZ of Charleston do for you?  Call today, 843-771-2908. ...read more

Ducts and Energy Efficiency

More about me the owner of Air Concept Solutions, llc.

More about me the owner of Air Concept Solutions, llc.I started off with a great company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida back in the mid 80’s (Florida Heating & Air) I worked with many great people there and felt that they held higher standards than any company I have ever seen in this market; when it came to residential and light commercial installs, service and new construction. I can truly say I learned from some of the best, from, Kevin and Jeff to Chuck and Dennis. They were all great guys who knew this trade in and out. They were the kind of guys that always helped those who showed the ambition and drive to move ahead, work hard and succeed to be the best at what they did. Back then it was more like a family environment and everyone knew what was expected of them. After many, years later ARS came in and took over our name, they kept a lot of the same people because they knew it worked. Eventually I moved up the ladder from a helper to an installer/change-out tech to a service technician. Then one day I got my chance to move into management it wasn’t easy but I knew I had what it took to do the job. I was always one to keep up with the new things coming out in the HVAC industry. Graduating from HVAC Technical School and getting my Nate Certification were two of my higher achievements. I always loved to read and keep my education up to speed on anything I had to deal with. As years moved on I had to relocate to South Carolina were I continued working for ARS as a Quality Control Manager, then as a Service Manager and I had a great opportunity to be an HVAC instructor for their Heating&Air Conditioning Program for the younger guys. All my life I looked forward to helping other as those before me helped me. Eventually I decided to take that leap and risk to start my own Heating&Air Conditioning Company. Now Air Concept Solutions, llc. We have been truly blessed and have grown so much over the years. Doing more and more each year I feel that our growth is due to always being fair and honest with our customers, providing great service. The one thing I was always taught was to always Do the Right Thing!.  Gregory M. DUCTZ of Charleston Wins Safety Aw

April 2011 NADCA Announces Winners of the 2010 Safety Awards (Washington, D.C.) Safety is a top concern for any business, which is why NADCA – The HVAC Inspection, Maintenance and Restoration Association recognizes member companies that demonstrate the ability to run safe operations. Each year, NADCA presents the Safety Awards to members that have applied for the program and met its standards, which are based on OSHA guidelines. This year, 65 NADCA member companies are being honored as winners of the 2010 Safety Awards. Out of these 65 companies, 40 qualified for the Outstanding Safety Award, which is given to members that have met the guidelines of the program for three or more consecutive years. Matt Mongiello, chairman of NADCA’s Education&Safety Committee, said, “The success of a company depends not only on production and sales, but also how safely each job is performed. There is no job so important – nor any service so urgent – that we cannot make time to work safely. “Establishment of a safe environment is the shared responsibility between a contractor and its employees at all levels of an organization. Achieving the goal of accident prevention and health preservation is an admirable feat and shows the commitment of a company dedicated to excellence,” added Mongiello, of Interior Maintenance Company in Lansdowne, Pa. The requirements for NADCA’s Safety Awards are based on standards from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In order to complete the Safety Awards Application, a company must maintain an OSHA #300A Log in accordance with record keeping requirements under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association created the NADCA Safety Awards Program to recognize those companies that have sustained superior employee safety and health program results. The NADCA Safety Awards Program is offered every year. 2010 Safety Award Winners DUCTZ of Charleston Summerville, SC ...read more

Dirty and Damaged Duct Work

Do you have vent covers that look like this or piles of debris in your duct work?  This may be caused from animal damage as was the case with this system.  Bird and rodent activity was evident from inside the house and the damage was found after searching the crawl space.  Once this happens, you are breathing whatever the critters bring with them and leave behind.  End result, the duct work had to be replaced for this system.     ...read more

Could Your Dryer Vent Be A Home For Something Other Than Lint

An early Sunday morning service call to clean a dryer vent turned into more of an issue than excessive lint build up.  After a new dryer was delivered and hooked up, the customer was told to have the vent line cleaned because there seemed to be a problem.  A problem indeed...the birds nest seen here was just the beginning of the debris pulled out by hand.  In addition, once the initial debris field was pulled out, it was evident that this new dryer was not going to be used anytime soon.  The old vinyl duct line was already ripped in several places and falling apart, and wasn't going to stand up to any type of cleaning.  The home owner agreed and a new properly installed hard pipe will be installed this week by DUCTZ of Charleston.  Call us today for all your dryer vent, air duct and carpet cleaning needs, 843-771-2908. ...read more
