Absolutely worst encounter ever experienced in retail as an average middle-class 20 year old Caucasian I expect to be treated no differently...the policies are very unclear. I was asked to buy a wig cap to try on any wigs, which i did no problem. The style and color I had liked (burgandy with a hard bang) was not displayed anywhere (not even a color close for a general idea) so when the women came out with the package she said you can't open or try on just hold the package to your head...like that makes any sense (why did I just purchase a wig cap). When I asked to speak to a manager his response was ''if you don't like our policy then get the f*** out!" Shocked and confused I went to the back and said I would just buy the wig, when the manager then followed me to the back of the store told me he's doesn't need my business, he's not accepting my money and to not come back. After more abuse than I should have allowed and leaving in tears I'm still flabbergasted!! ...read more

Pro's and cons of Layers

Layered Hair Styles Whether you have long or short hair, layered hair styles can add a fun and trendy look to your locks. Layers provide texture, volume, and contemporary appeal to any style, but they're not right for everyone.  Layered Looks Types of Layered Hair Styles Many different hair styles can incorporate layers, from bobs to bangs to teen dos. Even today's trendy looks such as sedu hair styles can incorporate layers for flair and individuality. Not every type of hair can use layers, however. Very curly hair does not layer well, because the curls tend to tighten and disrupt the layered look, creating a scruffy appearance. Similarly, individuals who like to change their styles frequently may not want to attempt layers, because it can take years to grow out them out. The key to fabulous layered hair styles is to choose the proper types of layers and use them to their full benefit to create a stunning look. Layer Length Layers can be cut in many different lengths. Some styles use a large number of layers cut closely together to create an overall fringe, while other styles may only have a few different lengths positioned for the best effect. The best range for layers is to keep them below the earlobe on long hair, and below the eye on short hair, otherwise they may look out of control. Another tactic that many layered looks use is to have the very top layer full length, while layers underneath add volume and bounce to the style without sacrificing the sleek, sophisticated look. Layers may be straight, angled, or curved to fit any style preferences. Benefits of Adding Layers Layered hair styles have many benefits. Adding layers can modernize an old style without too drastic of a change, and layers can be both flirty and elegant, making them appropriate for any age. Other benefits to adding layers include: Different layers create natural volume to hair without needing excessive chemicals. Layers can help heavily damaged hair by cutting off split or broken ends for a more planned look. Layers can be cut to balance any face shape. Creating layers can lighten very thick, heavy hair, allowing its natural waves to appear in medium and long styles. Individuals who suffer from migraines may find some relief with lighter layered styles. Celebrity Layers Many celebrities favor layers, and most celebrities can be found in a layered style at least once. Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston frequently wear layered dos, as do many other famous personalities who wear their hair long and loose. Layers give them a trendy, glamorous style without high maintenance. Caring for Layered Hair Styles Sexy Sideswept Layers While many layered styles can simply be washed, dried, and worn with a minimal amount of styling, layers do need some particular care to keep looking their best. To prevent a raggedy look from taking over the style, regular trims are necessary to even out the layers, and very brittle hair may require frequent conditioning to keep from developing the fuzzy look of layered split ends. To make layers more noticeable, many people choose to add highlights, lowlights, and other color to the layers. This not only makes them stand out, but it emphasizes the hair's texture and structure rather than just showing the appearance of a flat, uninspired style. If your layers start to bore you, it may be time to grow them out. Unfortunately, the process is far longer than the quick snip of first getting layers: growing them out can take years. The best way to grow out layers is to keep the bottom layer at an unchanging length, allowing the upper layers time to catch up with it. Regular trims (every 8-12 weeks) are still necessary for all layers, since damaged hair grows unevenly, creating a more haggard style. Keeping your hair healthy is the best way to grow out layers: consistent conditioning treatments can help top layers continue to grow so the style can be changed more quickly. Many individuals choose to go from a long layered look to a medium length style as soon as their layers are long enough for that type of change. Layered hair styles are versatile, trendy, and sophisticated. Whether you have long or short hair, a bob or a sedu style, or if you're interested in a celebrity do, layers are for you ...read more

Hair Loss in Women

Thinning Hair in Women and what to do about it. Do you find more than the average amount of hair in your drain, brush or on your pillow in the morning? Have you tried every volumizing product on the shelves and are considering a Donald Trump style comb-over in an attempt to hide your scalp? OK so maybe it's not that bad. An ounce of prevention…read on if you would like more information to prevent the worst from happening. THE FACTS: Every human head's hair is made of individual units called follicles.  When the hair is healthy, an average female hair follicle grows hair at a rate of 1/2 an inch a month.  On average, each follicle will grow for between 2 to 6 years.  At that point, the follicle rests for a period.  It then falls out, and a new hair follicle cycle will start. At any one time, 90% of our hair is growing, and 10% is in the rest stage. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out, and new hair starts to grow.    Causes of Female Hair Loss and Thinning Hair in Women 1. PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL STRESS Surgeries and emotional stress can cause hair loss. There are many other reasons that hair loss occurs on a temporary basis, and is usually resumed when rectified.  Hair Loss from stress and illness is temporary. There is a usually three month delay between the actual event and the onset of hair loss. There may also be another three month delay prior to the return of noticeable hair re-growth. 2. HORMONAL CONSIDERATIONS An overactive thyroid gland can cause hair loss.  Hair Loss after 3 months of a baby being born is another, due to a high level of certain hormones.  Blood thinners, gout medicines, birth control pills and anti-depressants can also cause hair loss.  Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children.  Cancer therapies and medications also causes human hair loss along with Diabetes and Lupus. 3. DIETARY CONSIDERATIONS Female hair loss may also occur due to dieting. Many diet programs are designed or administered under the direction of a physician with prescribed meals, dietary supplements and vitamins. Some believe that vitamins are a necessary part of the program to prevent hair loss associated with dieting. From a dermatologists's standpoint, however, the vitamins cannot prevent hair loss associated with rapid, significant weight loss. 4. FEMALE PATTERN BALDNESS Remember the normal hair growth process we discussed earlier? Androgens interfere with this growth process.  Androgens include testosterone and DHT.  Women make these hormones in small quantities as compared to men.  Then these hormones come in contact with the hair cells on the scalp, they change to a new potent DHT, which then binds with receptors deep within the hair follicle.  Over time, DHT excess builds up, almost like plaque build up in the heart to cause heart attacks.  This build up of DHT causes the hair follicle to shrink.  Follicles eventually die, and others become incapable of growing new hair.  This is what causes hair loss and Alopecia in women. 5. HAIR ABUSE   If you use pony tails, pigtails, tight hair rollers, or cornrows, you can cause Traction Alopecia.  If stopped before scarring, it can be stopped, if not it can be permanent. Pulling or tugging on the hair excessively can also lead to temporary hair loss. 6. ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES You might also have the same problem due to bad water, hard calcium deposits, you see what it does to your faucets and sinks now think about the fact that you are putting that same hard water on your skin and scalp, not pretty. 7. PRODUCT REACTIONS You may thinning because of the shampoo and conditioner you have been using for years has been quietly and unbeknownst to you clogging your pores leading to smaller roots that lead to thinner and more fragile hair growth.Styling tools such as hair sprays, styling gels and holding crèmes can also cause hair loss. If these products are used too frequently, if they are allowed to build up on the hair strands, or if they are used in excessive amounts they can weigh hair down, dry it out or weaken the strands. When this occurs hair strands can break, split and fall out. The result is premature thinning of the hair or hair loss. Outdo Hair Studio ...read more

Outdo Hair Studio Raffaele's BLOG

Answers to the top 3 questions I am asked by my hair clients. 1.  Will my hair grow faster is I cut it more frequently? This myth has been around for a very long time and the answer is, "No, cutting your hair does not make it grow faster or longer." However, what it does do is it cuts off the dry, damaged, and split ends that make your hair appear thin and lifeless. Freshly cut hair will give the appearance of thicker and healthier hair. For some people, this is the only way to get their hair to grow longer because their hair may be especially prone to splitting and breakage. If you routinely wear hair clips or pull your hair back into pony tails, you are damaging your hair, and the only way to eliminate this damage is to cut off the damaged portions and treat your hair more gently in the future. 2. Does hair color damage my hair? Not necessarily. When your hair is colored properly by a trained stylist or colorist, your hair can give the appearance of greater health and shine than it did before you entered the salon. Many technological advances have been made in the science of hair color. There are now ultra safe and gentle options that simply did not exist until just recently. Ammonia free hair color and organic hair color options are now in vogue.  Coloring your hair can also give you an emotional and psychological boost that will help with your self-esteem and with how you are perceived in the workplace. However, many home coloring kits can do untold damage to your hair, especially if they are used incorrectly, used too frequently, or when trying to change the color of your hair by more than two shades. A skilled colorist can do a lot to rectify these mistakes, but even they have limits if you have over-dyed your hair with an at-home kit. When considering a color change, always seek the advice of a trained colorist. They will help you to match color to your skin tone, making your color choice look very natural and no one the wiser that you are coloring your hair. 3. Do I really need to use a conditioner? Perhaps not necessary for everyone, but conditioner will help your hair by eliminating static electricity, strengthen it when styling, and keep it healthy and shiny. If you color your hair, or spend a lot of time in harsh environments (sun, wind, chlorine, etc.) you will want to condition your hair regularly. I often recommend a lighter option such as a creme rinse which is less likely to weigh down your hair. Be careful with store bought conditioners as these can often buildup on your hair and cause it to become dull looking and limp.
