Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are a rather large ant, sometimes getting as big as an inch in size. They will live indoors or outdoors, but are normally found in or around wood of some type. Unlike termites they do not eat the wood; they just burrow holes in the wood to live in. It’s possible you may be in need of professional carpenter and extermination. Where They Hide Outdoors you can find carpenter ants living among moist dead wood. They will burrow many chambers throughout the wood to make room for their family. Carpenter ants are a social ant and will live in colonies sometimes over a thousand in numbers. Indoors you can find them living around windows and eaves, especially in the kitchen and bathroom areas. They will be attracted to the moistest part of the house. Once they get into the house and breed, they can cause significant damage to wood, just like termites do. There are many times when these carpenter ants have been mistaken for termites. What do They Eat? Carpenter ants will feed on living and dead insects. They prefer what is called honeydew. This honeydew is a sweet substance that is produced by mill worms and other scale insects. Indoor carpenter ants will feed on anything they find sitting out. They will eat meat, fruits, vegetables and garbage. Anything that they can take back to the colony to sustain life. Most foraging is done at nights and can be as far as 100 yards away from their nest. Carpenter ants do not eat wood, they simple chew it up into a sawdust like substance to create tunnels for their living quarters. Pest Status Because of the damage the carpenter ant can do to infested wood, they have been deemed a domestic and agricultural pest. They can burrow thousands of tunnels and chambers in the center of the wood. This will compromise the stability of the structure and cause it to collapse. Finding a colony in your house could be devastating, depending on the extent of the infestation. Prevention of Carpenter Ants It may seem like preventing these ants from getting into your house is impossible, but it can be done. You will need to make sure that every crack and crevice is filled in. Painting wood with an enamel paint will help detour carpenter ants from burrowing into them. Try to keep wood as dry as possible, since carpenter ants are attracted to moisture. Killing Them Carpenter ants can be killed with a combination of dust and insecticide. The dust will need to be placed inside the tunnels with a dust injector. The insecticide will need to be sprayed around the noticed nest site. You may need to apply repeated treatments to completely eliminate the colony completely.   You may want to call a professional for carpenter ant extermination. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has the best resources for your needs. If your infestation is extremely bad there will be other steps that will need to be taken ensure the stability of your structure. You may have to enable the use of tenting to completely remove all of the carpenter ants inside your house. ...read more
