I decided to use American Women's Svc for my yearly exam, not for an abortion. I was nervous since the reviews on here aren't great. \t\n\t\nThe place is clean although rundown. I sat in the reception area and filled out paperwork. The staff was kind. The paperwork was a little off-putting since it was mainly for women seeking abortions. \t\n\t\nI was called back in a timely fashion and the nurse was kind. I gave a urine sample and the nurse asked why I was there. I stated I was there for a yearly exam and birth control. She asked what kind of birth control I was interested in and I said I was interested in the Paraguard IUD. The nurse said okay and I was sent back into the waiting room\t\n\t\nI was called back again, this time to see the doctor. The nurse led me to an exam room and told me to change, just my pants. I was definitely expecting a breast exam, but I didn't press the issue. I undressed and got on the table.\t\n\t\nThe exam room was dingy, but not dirty. The fluorescent lights flickered and gave a horror film feel to the room. Picture it, an old exam table with stirrups, the ancient stainless steel speculum, the sea foam green tile, and now the flickering lights. Eventually the lights went out and I was sitting in the dark. I wasn't dressed, so I decided to wait it out and just wait for the doctor. \t\n\t\nThe doctor was outside my exam room door and I heard him say, "IUD. . .We don't do those here. I've never done one of those." They then continued to speculate why I wanted one. Uh, why not ask me directly? \t\n\t\nSo the doctor came in and he remarked that it was dark in the exam room and that the exam couldn't take place in the room. No big deal to me, until they didn't let me dress and had me parade to another room with a paper sheet not fully covering me. \t\n\t\nThe doctor was very kind. He was an older man that mentioned he was glad I was smiling. I liked him. He asked me why I wanted a pap smear, like why would I need that? He asked if I had any symptoms that would warrant one. I said no, that it was just for my health. There were three, not one chaperones in the room. They were training to learn how to assist in a pap smear, but no one ever asked me if that was okay. I would have gladly said yes but I wish they would have sought after my consent. That was quick and simple and the doctor and I talked about birth control.\t\n\t\nHe made no mention of the IUD. He didn't give me any options just suggested Tri-Cyclin. This was fine, I was prepared to go on a hormonal birth control in case the IUD didn't work out. He explained how to use the Tri-Cyclin well, although I was disappointed in what he knew about the pill. He wanted me to use the Sunday Start method and wasn't aware of the Quick Start method, and insisted upon the twenty four hour between pills. I know for a fact these pills don't need to be taken like that from another doctor I had this discussion with. I nodded my head and accepted his lecture, after all he is a doctor, but I was disappointed how outdated his methods were. \t\n\t\nNot a bad experience, but I'm glad I'm informed enough to know things weren't right. I might be back. I haven't decided yet. ...read more

I don't normally do this and for me to take the time to write a review please know that I have something to say. You don't need to listen to me and everyone can have a different experience at the same place. But, I am trying to aviod someone else having to go through what I lived through. I am a mother of four, so I know what child birth feels like and I KNOW pain. Well, when I found myself in the situation again, it was a tough decision but my other children are almost grown up so I looked into alternatives. This was not my first abortion, I had one when I was 20 years younger, so again I want you know where my experience is coming from. \t\n\t\nI went to this office and at first I was thrilled, as someone else mentioned, there were no protesters and they actually got me in and out of there within 2 hours. But, I was a little weary of the condition of the place and that all the equipment was outdated and the sonogram room doubled as an operating room. The nurses were nice and very compassionate. But, a week after I was home I started to hemorfhage and it was an experience that I don't wish on anyone. I was scared I thought ,I was going to bleed to death. I had blood clots the size of my fist. I spent two days in the hospital and had to go in for an emergency D&C. It was the never ending abortion & it was a constant reminder of the decision that I had made. Now, it is like pulling teeth to get my money back and I am going to have bills from my insurance to correct this procedure. I just don't want anyone else to have to deal with this but I do understand if you had a wonderful experience at this place, it just was I did not. ...read more

I went here and they were great! I was frightened by the last reviewer and I almost didn't go. But then I noticed that the reviewer said she went to an office in "DC" and yet she was posting a review about their office in Pittsburgh. Then, I saw on their web site that they don't even have an office in DC! So I decided that the reviewer must be a kook who didn't know what he/she was talking about. So I took a chance and I went. \t\n\t\nI am glad that I did. They were wonderful!\t\n\t\nThe nurses were very nice to me, especially one named Tammy. But they were all excellent. I am a nurse myself and I could tell that the whole place was up to standards. The office was clean, neat, and professional. There was ample space and the waiting room was large and comfortable. The doctor was gentle and talked to me for a long time. He was a Board Certified Ob/Gyn. His name was Dr. Rajan. He was a kindly, little old man. It didn't hurt at all, and everything went fine. The girls in the office were all really sweet to me all the way around, and they made the whole experience as good as it could be.\t\n\t\nDon't listen to this last reviewer. It's probably an anti-abortion nut. I wanted to write this review so that other women don't get scared by this reviewer like I was. This office was clean and nice and professional and the nurses were great! The doctor was kind and professional. There was no blood on the floor and they did use red bag for medical waste. The waiting time was a bit long (I was there for about 2 1/2 hours), but it was worth it. \t\n\t\nDon't hesitate to go here. This was my second abortion, and it was way better than the other place I went to in Pittsburgh (which was just OK). ...read more

Should I move in with my partner?

You and your partner may be thinking about the future. What is the next step in your relationship? An unplanned pregnancy or even a “false alarm” pregnancy test may be a great opportunity to look at your relationship and make some decisions about your future together. Ask yourself three big questions as you think through your options. IS MY PARTNER “THE ONE”? Is this a relationship that you see as a long term life partnership? Does your partner share that same long term view? Ask yourself, “would I completely trust this person with my money, my children, my car keys, my health and well being?” Is your partner helping you achieve your dreams? Does your partner get along with your family? Does he or she help you “shoulder your burdens” financially, emotionally and physically? Are there things you’d change in this person? SHOULD WE LIVE TOGETHER? Before you start sharing a rent payment, you may want to take a look at your long term goals. Is marriage part of your vision for your future? Living together actually lowers your chances of getting married. 40% of couples living together will never get married. Couples getting married after living together have a 50% higher chance of divorce than couples who did not live together. Are children part of your vision for the future? Three fourths of children born to live-in couples will see their parents split up before reaching age 16. And all studies show that children are safer, stronger, and have less behavioral problems when living with parents who are married. Living together might seem like a way to save money and get to know this person, but cohabiting has been shown to lower levels of happiness, increase sexual unfaithfulness, and increase likelihood of divorce. SHOULD WE GET MARRIED? If you’ve been able to answer question #1 with a clear “Yes!” then you and your partner should begin to talk about marriage. Your first thoughts might be “I’m not ready!” “We can’t afford it!” or “I want to wait until we are financially set up.” But when you’ve found the right person, it’s the right time to start this discussion. Pre-marriage counseling is a great way to explore what is going on in your relationship. And if you feel uncomfortable bringing it up, maybe we can help. Our Life Support program lets you explore your feelings and can help you to share your thoughts with your partner. Let’s talk. Call us today at 412-687-7767. ...read more

Review from another happy customer

I purchased Groupon deals that offered me the opportunity to try the Anne Penman Heat Wrap Therapy located on in the North Hills as well as another company that provided the same service at multiple locations throughout the area. I had purchased five sessions for both businesses, but only continued with Maria’s location in the North Hills. By doing so, I had the opportunity to compare the client care and attention between the two businesses; Maria is theBESTby far! She made sure to tell me what to wear prior to my first appointment; the other business did not. She is very conscientious and makes sure the wraps are in the proper locations on your body and as tight as she can get them to ensure a successful session. If you are interested in trying the Formostar heat treatments, I highly recommend Maria Lee/Anne Penman location in the North Hills. She’s the best in the Greater Pittsburgh area, so don’t waste your money on her competition ~ you’ll be highly disappointed if you do! STOP SMOKING WITH LASER THERAPY – IT WORKS!

Everyone knows smoking is bad, but not everyone knows how to quit. Half of all long-term smokers will die from tobacco, yet smoking is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death. It is a prime factor in heart disease, stroke and chronic lung disease, as well as causing cancer of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, mouth and bladder, and a contributor to cancer of the cervix, pancreas and kidneys. A new approach for quitting tobacco now exists in laser therapy – a well-established technique with a wide range of medical applications. Anne Penman Laser Therapy in Greentree’s Foster Plaza offers specialized treatment for smoking cessation. “I had tried to quit smoking for many years, trying everything from going ‘cold turkey’ to nicotine patches and gum to hypnosis. Nothing worked for me until I tried laser therapy,” said Kevin Byrne, co-owner of Anne Penman’s Pittsburgh location along with his wife, Maria. The Anne Penman method utilizes a cold, soft laser beam which is applied to specific energy points in the hands, ears, nose and wrists that are associated with nicotine craving. It helps people quit smoking cigarettes and cigars, as well as stopping smokeless tobacco product use. The laser therapy works by increasing endorphins in the body, relieving the most common signs of physical withdrawal, including circulatory problems, headaches and stress levels. Clients enter a phase of deep relaxation and circulation is activated. This process generates natural endorphins that bind to nicotine receptors, with the saturation of these receptors exponentially reducing the withdrawal symptoms to a minimum level. Both Mr. Byrne and his wife are certified laser technicians, having gone through Anne Penman’s intensive training program. “Our laser treatment program includes three sessions,” Mr. Byrne said. “We find the majority of our clients are smoke-free from the initial session.” ...read more
