Dealing With Migraines and Headaches

Headaches are no fun, and migraines are another level of painful. Living with either of these issues can make you feel grumpy and in the worst-case scenario leave you unable to function. Medication can help in the short term but when the problem is ongoing, or re-occurring, pills are not enough. Oftentimes, the source of your headaches and migraines is structural, and therefore with proper treatment it is possible to permanently overcome this debilitating issue. Chiropractic treatment in Tulsa may help end your ongoing headaches and migraines, read on to understand how. Headaches and Migraines in Tulsa Whether you are dealing with a persistent throbbing in your head, or the worst symptoms associated with migraines, including light and noise intolerance, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, depression and irritation the cause may be a structural issue. When the spine moves out of position because of developmental issues, trauma, repetitive stress and other incidents it can put pressure on the surrounding nerves. When the nerves are compressed or irritated they send a message to the muscles of the back, neck and jaw to tighten. This tightness can lead directly to an acute headache or migraine. Over time the tightness can also pull your bones out of alignment leading to more persistent headaches and migraines. A headache or migraine can be a sign that there are deeper problems arising in your spinal column, and because every other system in your body is impacted by your spinal health, it is very important to deal with these issues when the signs begin to arise. Chiropractic Treatment for Migraines and Headaches Chiropractic care has a long history of successfully treating headaches and migraines. Chiropractors have extensive understanding of subtle issues occurring in the spine which, due to its connection with the nervous system, is very often the source of pain. A chiropractic treatment starts with a thorough evaluation that will rule out other possible causes of your headache and examine your spine for issues of misalignment. The assessment will determine the exact type of treatment that is necessary for the specific issue at the root of the pain. Using gentle and non-invasive techniques a chiropractor is able to achieve adjustments to the spine that, although they may seem subtle, can provide almost instant relief and restore your long term health. ...read more

To fluoride or Not?

As I was watching, NBC’s Parks and Recreation, the other night the main topic was if they were going to put Fluoride in the water or not. The job of the city workers and council was to convince the citizens and other council this was okay. Much like what we go through in real life. Whether it’s Fluoride or Chloramines, or other additives that are in the water this is obviously a big enough topic that even producers of TV shows feel they need to poke fun at it. What is the deal though? Do these things need to be added to our water? I guess it depends who you ask.  The American Dental Association is a huge advocate on fluoride in your drinking water. It makes sense, if you are constantly drinking water with fluoride and exposing, your teeth to its benefits this is going to have a favorable response to cause less dental decay they even go as far as saying that a lifetime of having fluoride in your water can promote money savings compared to the cost of dental fillings. But, what does all that fluoride do to you ? According, to the EPA ”exposure to excessive consumption of fluoride over a lifetime may lead to increased likelihood of bone fractures in adults, and may result in effects on bone leading to pain and tenderness. Children aged 8 years and younger exposed to excessive amounts of fluoride have an increased chance of developing pits in the tooth enamel, along with a range of cosmetic effects to teeth.”     However, standards for monitoring are also placed for municipalities that choose to do fluoride. This means that the level or fluoride put into your water is deemed overall safe by the national guidelines.              Fluoride is defiantly a personal opinion if you are want to remove fluoride from your water Reverse Osmosis is the best way to do this. Our Reverse Osmosis machine by Pure Water Technology will remove fluoride ensuring the purest water for your next glass of water. Not only with this machine remove the fluoride but it will remove chemicals, solvents, chlorine, lead, lead mercury and arsenic. Offering the best water available in your office. Think water is boring? Try Sparkling!

It's the beginning of the year, you know that time where you tell yourself that you will do better at things; well I'm just as bad as  next person but in all honesty, for our health one of the easiest things, we can ALL do is have plenty of water intake. Even though its cold we may not realize it but, with most of us living in and working in places where central heat is involved we have all had the moisture sucked right out of us. Some how we must get that water back into our system. According to the Mayo Clinic the 8x8 rule is not stuck in stone but it's an easy number to remember and as a general rule good for most people according to weight and activity. But what does that water help your body do?  Keeps its temperature normal. Lubricates and cushions your joints. Protects your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues. Gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements and of course the big one helps weight loss. It's said that if you drink 2 glasses of water before each meal you will fill fuller and eat less. To me water is one of those things it's better when you get it served at a spa, or in a hotel lobby in one of those jars filled with fresh fruit or even a fancy machine where it comes out really cold. Often times, I just crave the carbonation of a pop but, I know how bad they are for me. Fortunately, these days, water machines now put out carbonated water, becoming sparkling water taking away water boredom! According to #TracyMiller, with the #NYDNheath drinking some sparkling water may add some fun to our water boredom, but be careful of what you add, adding to much items could have you equaling a pop. Tracy recommends adding mint leaves, cucumber, lemon or lime or other fruits. If your still not going for the fruit thing try your favorite sugar free Torani product or a crystal light. Chiropractic Care for Stress

Do you have stress in your life? If you answered yes, that makes you a normal human being. Did you know stress is one of many factors that can cause neck and back pain? Stress can affect your body from mental, emotional and physical changes in your body. When you are stressed one of the body’s normal responses is muscle tension. Muscle tension, especially in the neck and upper back, can be caused by stress. When muscles are tight they can pull vertebrae out of alignment leading to long term problems and pain. Stress can cause headaches, anxiety and high blood pressure. Removing the stress from life is always the best thing but also getting your spine checked is good because removing the stress is not always an option.  Get checked by a chiropractor to help lower the affects stress has on your body. WEEKLY HEALTH UPDATE

Courtesy of: John H. Keefe III, D.C. (918) 663-1111 WELLNESS/PREVENTION: NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT FOR EXERCISE INDUCED ACHES AND PAINS  Ginger: A natural pain reliever with a long history of medicinal uses, ginger (both raw and heat-treated) has been shown to reduce muscular pain by about 24 percent, Curcumin: Studies have shown curcumin (the pigment that gives the spice turmeric its vibrant yellow-orange color) is effective in relieving pain, increasing mobility, and reducing inflammation. Omega-3 fats: These beneficial fats are highly anti-inflammatory, as well as very beneficial for your heart. My favorite omega-3 fat is krill oil, which has unparalleled ability to quell pain and inflammation. Astaxanthin: This natural-occurring supernutrient is a powerful antioxidant boasting an encyclopedia of health benefits, including decreased post-exertion soreness and faster recovery time. It even increases your body’s ability to metabolize fat! In a 2007 study, mice given astaxanthin showed heightened body fat reduction when given astaxanthin with exercise, compared to exercise alone. Cherries: Cherries are a proven anti-inflammatory, as well as reducing your uric acid level. Cherries have been scientifically shown to help with things like arthritis and gout, and may have some usefulness for general muscle soreness. One study involving a group of long distance runners found that tart cherry juice significantly reduced post-exertion pain. Arnica: Homeopathic arnica was demonstrated to reduce muscle soreness among marathon runners in a 2007 study. IN THE NEWS:  EAT FISH, LIVE LONGER We all know eating fish has a number of benefits, but what if we told you it can also help you live longer? That is what many researchers have found after doing numerous studies. According to a new study, eating fish could potentially slash an older person's risk of dying prematurely by more than a quarter, and their risk of dying from heart disease by more than a third, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Washington. In their study, researchers examined 16 years of data pertaining to 2,700 healthy U.S. adults aged 65 or older who participated in the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS). The researchers also analyzed the total proportion of blood omega-3 fatty acids -- including three specific ones -- in participants' blood samples at baseline. After adjusting for dietary, lifestyle and other factors, they found that the fatty acids were linked with a significantly lower risk of mortality. NOTE: Eat salmon or tuna no more than three times a week.   CHIROPRACTIC:MANAGEMENT OF LOW BACK PAINThe newState of OregonEvidence-BasedClinical Guidelinesfor the Evaluation and Management ofLow Back Painrecommends Spinal Adjustments as the only nonpharmacological treatment for acutelower back pain. The guidelines, which have been adopted by the Oregon Health Authority, are a collaborative effort between the Center for Evidence-Based Practice, Oregon Corporation for Health Care Quality, Oregon Health and Sciences University's Center for Evidence-based Policy, and the new Oregon Health Evidence Review Commission. Houston We Have A Problem

These words were immortalized from a movie on an Apollo disaster. In this disaster fortunately all onboard survived. But there is a real-life disaster happening where those involved are not as lucky. I'm always amazed and mystified by human behavior. As Americans we sometimes are very gullible. Madison Avenue spends hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising because advertising gets people to do things they normally wouldn't do. Giant drug companies seem to have convinced the public that safe pharmaceutical answers exist for practically every possible health complaint or concern. Unfortunately, the truth is that most drugs and hormones fail to live up to this image of "safe efficacy" on both accounts-they are not without dangerous side effects and they are not always the most efficient method of dealing with a problem over the long-term. For some reason the advertisements sometimes leave out the small matter of side effects. You hear a lot about the benefits of calcium blockers you don't hear that magnesium is nature's natural calcium blocker. You don't hear that calcium blockers can also block fertility, increase rates of cancer, gastrointestinal bleeding, memory loss, and heart attacks (one of the things it was supposed to prevent). That tranquilizers can lead to Parkinson's symptoms months or years after you have stopped taking the drugs. Drugs for high cholesterol increase your risk for heart failure by 60 percent. The patients who have bypass surgery have increased heart attack risk by 214%. Did you know that the common medical treatment for enlarged prostate is clinically proven to leave more than one in three men impotent. Women taking synthetic estrogen increase their cancer risk 13 times, yet natural estrogens have no risk at all. The most common drugs recommended to arthritic patients kill 16,500 arthritic patients a year and on top of that destroys cartilage. Chronic pain sufferers die from pain killing drugs at a rated of 20,000 a year. "JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAIN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, NOV. 20, 1996. In 1994 there were well over two million adverse drug reactions recorded. How many were not recorded? There are around 2000 deaths per week due to drug reactions. Even some medical authors indicate that well over 80 percent of these patients could have been treated through natural methods. 44,000 to 98,000 people in the U.S. die from "medical errors" each year."JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAIN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, NOV. 20, 1996 Even using the lowest estimate, this places "medical errors" as the eighth leading cause of death, ahead of AIDS, breast cancer, motor vehicle accidents. Those of you who are news junkies and have watched CNN lately have been hearing some of these statistics. But unfortunately as quick as these reports come they disappear and are soon forgotten. To recap this information, reports state that the fourth leading cause of death and the eighth leading cause of death are due to the effects of drugs and surgery. The good news is this. Americans have slowly but surely been turning from drug therapy to natural health care. Long before these news reports and studies were released, Americans innately have been determining these truths on their own. But unfortunately not enough people have been made aware of the problem. What is interesting is that over the last few years chiropractic and natural health care has been having glowing reports from research. Just a few years ago the government released a report to every doctor, every hospital, and every library in the United States about the No. 1 health problem in the United States. What is that problem? Low back pain. What was the best treatment on the planet? Chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic care from recent research has been shown not only very effective but also the most effective care for arthritis, headaches, infantile colic and we should soon hear on a study on ear infections. It was just three years ago that a massive study indicated antibiotics were not the right choice for most ear infections. In fact the study indicated antibiotics increase the length of most ear infections and caused an increase in recurrence, by weakening the immune system. Mothers have long known chiropractic has a good track record here. Just recently chiropractic was shown the best treatment on the planet for whiplash type injuries. Over the past 15 years the research being done on vitamins, herbs and diet have proven their connection with most diseases. In fact those who study research tell us that chiropractic and diet have more research behind what they purport to do then drugs and surgery. You don't get sick because you're deficient in some pharmaceutical drug. You primarily get sick due to violation of one of the five natural laws of health. Law 1, diet. Law 2, exercise. Law 3, rest and relaxation. Law 4, positive mental and spiritual attitude. Law 5, pressure free nervous system (free of Spinal misalignments). Natural health care and chiropractic offers health care for the whole family. Most health care issues have a safe natural solution. At Keefe Clinic we offer the diagnostic and treatment choices you want. If you have heard of a particular natural treatment we most likely offer it. Call 663-1111. Chiropractic and natural health care is the treatment of choice for the next millennium. ...read more

Tulsa Chiropractor helps Scoliosis

The exact cause of most scoliosis is unknown, although there are a number of contributing factors. Illness, trauma, injuries, other diseases and even day to day activities like sitting at a computer all day can all precipitate scoliosis in a patient. A great deal of research has also shown that this condition can be passed from parent to child genetically. Chiropractic treatment, bracing and surgery are the most common forms of treating someone with scoliosis.Chiropractic treatment for scoliosisis given to reduce pain, straighten the spine and improve movement of the body. The ultimate goal is to halt the progression of this disorder and to avoid surgery if at all possible. While a patient is under chiropractic treatment, the ligaments and tendons will be loosened, the spine will be re-adjusted and the muscles will be retrained so that they will hold their correct position. This should lead to better posture in the person, as well as increased flexibility and movement. Chiropractic care has been proven both safe and effective for the treatment of scoliosis.
