There does seem to be a significant problem with bill-padding with Weston Hurd in Cleveland. Not only do I keep hearing about this problem from various lawyers and clients, but I also have my own experience as a client with Weston Hurd sending me outrageously overpriced bills. Honestly, I’ll be surprised if Weston Hurd is still in business in a year from now. I’ve heard a main cause of the bill-padding problem has to do with Carolyn Cappel, the managing partner of the firm. I don’t know if this is true, but I have heard it is, and I’ve also heard that she will likely no longer be the managing partner after this year (2018). ...read more

I’m hearing that it’s not just isolated instances of bill-padding, but rather a systemic problem at Weston. One former client told me that bill-padding is very common at Weston. Thankfully, it looks like there may now be a reckoning happening vis-a-vis corrupt Weston lawyers. A Weston Hurd lawyer named Scott Smith from Pepper Pike was recently suspended for massive bill-padding and other invoice irregularities. Google ‘Scott Smith’ and ‘Weston Hurd’ and you’ll find multiple articles about this Weston Hurd lawyer’s bill-padding. But I worry that there may be many more examples of Weston Hurd lawyers who haven’t yet been caught cheating clients with excessive charges, and are allowed to just continue stealing from innocent clients. ...read more
