Screen Burn

Screen burn ? What is it ?  This is something that will happen on glass when windows have aluminum screens on the outside of the windows, as on double-hung Anderson windows. Over time, every time it rains, the  rain may hit the screen and the metal from the screen oxidizes into the pores of the glass. With regular maintenance of windows (at least once a year) this won't be an issue. But if you let the windows go without cleaning and the rain is hitting the screens, it will appear. It will not come off with soap and water. It's not on the surface but in the pores. At NY Scratch Repair (www.nyscratchrepair.com) we are able to remove it, in a safe way, without damaging the seals on your windows. With my window cleaning business (www.clearviewwindowwash.com), I will go to homes and people will complain about a previous window cleaner, saying how they would call them back but they weren't able to get the window clean. I explain that it isn't the window cleaners fault but from lack of maintenance and the glass is stained. I have restored it for them and will tell them that the glass needs to be maintained or it will come back. Some people listen, some don't. One thing for sure, the glass will look brand new when restored. As with everything we buy, maintenance is the key. If you think it doesn't matter to you, let us do 1 sash of 1 window, so you can see the difference. Visit us at www.nyscratchrepair.com or www.clearviewwindowwash.com ...read more

Cleaning Stainless Steel

This is a blog published by Bob Vila. At NY Scratch Repair ( www.nyscratchrepair.com) we remove scratches, discoloration, scuff marks and rust from stainless steel. We are always asked, after the stainless is scratched, what is the best way to clean it. The following are some great ways to clean it. We also remove scratches, acid etching &,graffiti from glass. Pet scratches can removed from sliding glass doors and water spotiing from shower glass and windows. We (www.nyscratchrepair.com) also have sealers for, glass, stainless steel&natural stone. Enjoy !Photo: The Victoria CondoGleaming and shiny, stainless steel brings a bright and polished air to any kitchen. Keeping that brilliant sheen, however, takes a little bit of work… and some very specific cleaning products. The first thing to consider when you set out to clean stainless steel appliances, sinks, and countertops is what not to do. Some popular cleaning products will damage the finish on stainless steel, and even plain water can leave unsightly marks and spots if not used properly. Despite its name, stainless steel can and does stain. So first and foremost, for clean stainless steel surfaces, these are products and techniques to avoid:- DON’T use chlorine bleach or any product containing chloride.- DON’T use oven cleaners.- DON’T use steel wool, steel brushes, or highly abrasive scrubbing pads—these can cause scratches or leave a residue of small particles that may rust.- DON’T use abrasive cleansers on brushed stainless steel.- DON’T clean a stainless steel surface unless it is cool to the touch.- DON’T use gritty, dirty, or excessively hard water, as it can leave spots or brownish stains.Photo: tohop.comAlthough the list of what not to do may seem daunting, there are some very simple things that you can do to clean stainless steel appliances without going any farther than your kitchen sink. Keep in mind the following:• Pay attention to your owner’s manual, following the cleaning and care instructions to the letter. Some new stainless steel appliances are treated with a clear-coat finish at the factory, and some cleaning products can strip or mar that finish.• One of the best habits to adopt is to wipe down your appliances with a damp, soapy washcloth every time you do the dishes; rinse the washcloth with clean water and wipe again to remove any soap; then finish with a wipe of a dry terry towel.Photo: Best Cleaning Supply Co.• Always wipe in the direction of the stainless steel “grain,” starting at the top of the appliance and working your way down towards the floor.• For heavier grease or baked-on foods, use a nylon scrubbie, a mild detergent, and hot water. Be sure to rinse the surface and towel dry to prevent water spots or staining.• To remove really tough dirt and stains, make a paste of baking soda mixed with liquid dish soap and gently scrub with a nylon scrubbie or an old toothbrush. If some stains remain, use undiluted vinegar, again scrubbing gently with a soft brush. Be sure to rinse and towel dry.• You may want to buff your appliances periodically with a stainless steel polish, lemon oil, or a silicone-based spray to maintain a lustrous finish. Apply the polish in the direction of the grain with a lint-free cloth; buff and dry with another lint-free cloth.Photo: Cerama BriteThere are numerous non-abrasive cleaners and polishes that are designed specifically for use on stainless steel. My personal favorite to use when I clean stainless steel is 3M professional grade, but there are several other highly recommended brands, including Bar Keeper’s Friend, Cerama Bryte, Sprayway and Weiman. When in doubt, always test your cleaner on someplace hidden, like the back or sides, before moving on to the front or top.  ...read more

Glass Scratch Removal

Glass scratch removal has been available for about 30 years by using a wet grinding system. Water is fed through the abrasive pads, that grind the glass, in order to keep the glass cool. The problem with this method is that the water will lift part of the pad off of the glass thus creating distortion. The finished product will make the glass look like a fun house mirror. The method we use at NY Scratch Repair is a dry process which enables the pad to stay on the glass. It enables the repairs to be done in a shorter amount of time and for a fraction of the cost of replacement. You can have the glass repaired for 30-50% of replacement cost. On some surfaces in the home it may be cheaper to replace the glass. On some windows the pane of glass can be replaced for about the same amount that a scratch can be removed. On the other hand, scratches on a sliding glass door, that are usually caused by a dog or cat wanting to get in, can be repaired at less than half the cost of replacement. We also can remove the hard water stains on windows and shower doors. The minerals in water can be damaging to most surfaces. Keep your surfaces looking new.
