Training in the Meisner Technique and Beyond at NYC’s William Esper Studio   AtWilliam Esper Studio– the world-renowned, New York City acting conservatory – the Meisner-based Acting Technique is the foundation on which our training is built. Students learn to listen and respond truthfully, follow their impulses and build characters based in realistic behavior. Once enrolled in the Acting Technique, students are encouraged to explore a wide range ofsupplemental classesthat support additional development and creativity taught byinternationally recognized faculty.   Movement Technique begins with discovering physical freedom and emotional release. Unlike a traditional dance class, Movement Technique is designed to help students learn to physically process their experience. The work then progresses into alignment, physical characterizations and behaviors and then into historical period work.   The Voice & Speech classes help students develop vibrant, flexible vocal instruments. After working to master Neutral American Speech, and eliminate any regional/international dialects, students grow into classical work and non-native dialects.   In Alexander Technique, students discover and learn to let go of physical habits that may interfere with performance. Taught both in the classroom and in private sessions, students learn to address these habits and then how to translate adjustments for acting situations.   The Mask Workshops allow students to explore their deepest non-intellectual impulses. The freedom discovered in these classes aligns so closely with the Acting Technique, responding on impulses without thinking about what to say.   Dance class is designed to be a physical expression of the Acting Exercise. In this class, students explore physical openness and learn to listen and respond to their partner without physical blocks.   In Stage Combat, students learn to bring a fight to life the same way they learn to bring a scene to life. Beginning with hand-to-hand combat and building towards larger prop weapons, students safely practice techniques applicable to stage and screen.    Improvisation classes fine tune the actor’s ability to listen and be acutely tuned in to their partner. In this workshop, students build truthful characters and stories in the moment, from nothing. This idea, this skill, is a detailed way to enhance the Meisner-trained actor’s ability to work from unanticipated moment to unanticipated moment.   Taught by a working director, actors in the Script Analysis class learn how to uncover true meaning of a script. By exploring different playwrights, genres and styles, actors become adept at discovering a writer’s intentions for characters and the play as a whole.   In Mine & Physical Theater, actors are introduced to mime and pantomime. The work includes style work and movement improvisations and actors will learn how mime can augment their actor training.   Actors at William Esper Studio have access to a variety of classes designed specifically to prepare them being in the business of acting. In Acting On-Camera, students get a sense of being on a set and the technical aspects of working with a camera. Audition Technique class offers students the chance to experience audition scenarios with industry professionals and practice techniques that will empower them during the sometimes-challenging audition situation. In Monologue class, actors have the opportunity to work on individual pieces and explore ideas in a safe, classroom setting before applying the work to professional situations. Additionally, The Studio offers scene study classes and workshops with working industry guests to give actors the opportunity to continually refine their skills.   A well-rounded actor comes from well-rounded training.
