Does Antifreeze Wear Out? YES!

When anti corrosion additives in the antifreeze begin to wear out a lime acid can begin to attack the radiator, head gaskets, heater core, water pump, anything that is connected to the cooling system.  Once this process starts it is very hard to stop.    Surveys that have been performed over the years show coolant neglect is one of the leading causes of cooling system breakdowns.  It is much more cost effective to flush the cooling system and install new antifreeze to prevent this from happening. Why does antifreeze wear out, conventional green antifreeze formulations usually contain a number of inorganic corrosion inhibitors that provide immediate corrosion protection because they maintain the pH of the solution (buffer it), but  are consumed or transformed chemically as they perform their functions. As the coolant is heated and cooled, and exposed to air, the components of the conventional antifreeze additive package are depleted over time.  This causes the pH to drop, and is why the coolant should be changed out every two years or 24,000 miles.  Extended life coolants are touted as having longer potential service life than conventional antifreezes because of the fact that the components in the additive package are not chemically consumed as they perform their function of inhibiting corrosion but the components do react with any air introduced  in the system and  a “red muck” is likely to form and could cause serious cooling system problems. Regardless of the type of antifreeze used, the additive package will eventually break down and cease to provide adequate corrosion protection.  The antifreeze will also pick up contaminants from the engine cooling system.  In other words, antifreeze wears out and gets dirty.  According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Cooling System failure is the leading cause of mechanical breakdowns on the highways.  In this cold the prospect of becoming a roadside popcicle is not a good one.  Let American Auto Air properly  maintain your cooling system so your vehicles heating system will operate at top efficiency. ...read more

Why Does My Auto Mechanic Always Finds Something Wrong?

Cars are more dependable than ever.  That means that you are going to a repair shop fewer times.  When you do need to go in it is critical that you use a full service shop because lots of systems and their components  need to be inspected and confirmed that they’re working right It is your auto mechanic’s responsibility to look for everything that is not up to standard in your car when you bring it in for service.   Time and time again we at American Auto Air, see cars that have had their oil changed by the “Quick Lube” or brakes serviced by the "$99.00 Brake Place" that need extensive (translated – Expense) work because a problem was not caught or brought to the owners attention early on.  But wait you say,” I have heard all the stories, read all the negative reviews about the add-on these places say are required”.  A $19 oil change  becomes $80, a $99 brake job becomes $350 so how do they miss so much?  Many of the recommend add-ons are based on corporate policy and procedure not training and experience of the technicians or your cars particular needs. American Auto Air technicians inspect each of the critical systems and make recommendations to bring your vehicle up to a generally accepted level of maintenance based on its mileage and age.  If you haven’t had your car inspected in a while that could be a laundry list of items.  Remember you haven't been in for while, everything is or was running fine.  Do not despair, our service advisors will explain everything that we found and categorize each repair as to how important it is for safety, drivability, further damage, economy  and comfort.  We don't try to scare you with comments like "If it were me I wouldn't drive this out of the parking lot with out it being repaired"  Then you can make an informed decision as to which repairs you want to have done and which can wait.  We know most vehicle owners have been stretching their service intervals lately to save money and we can help you plan your automotive repair expenditures. ...read more
