Best Ways to Remove a Nail From a Tire

It’s there. You can see it. Like a magnet, your tire has attracted a nail. Now what? You know a nail in the tire cannot be good, but what should you do? Letting it go may only lead to future problems. Here are the best ways to remove a nail from a tire.

  • Take your vehicle to a tire repair shop. Allow a professional to properly remove the nail and repair the tire. The cost of this repair is usually less than $20.
  • Repair the tire with a patch rather than a plug. Once the nail has been removed, the hole should be repaired with a patch to prevent future leakage. A plug only temporarily seals the hole.
  • Using needle nose pliers is a simple way to remove the nail; however, you should be prepared to fix the hole immediately. If not, air will leak and you will have a flat tire.

  • It is not recommended that you remove a nail with your fingers; it is usually too tight and may result in damage to your hands.
  • If you find it absolutely necessary to remove the nail from the tire yourself, be sure to add Fix-A-Flat spray to the tire. This will help seal the hole until you can have it professionally repaired.
