What Items Can I Recycle?

Recycling allows us to conserve our resources and help to preserve the environment. In recent years, technological advances and more participation have led to a tremendous increase in recycling efforts. While preventing items from ending up in landfills is important, it should be noted that not everything is recyclable. Here is a list of five things that you cannot send to your local recycling facility. Styrofoam Styrofoam is commonly-used for plates, cups, coolers etc, so it’s unfortunate that styrofoam cannot be recycled. But it still should not get thrown away, because styrofoam is not biodegradable. It will sit in a landfill for more than 500 years before it is destroyed. To help limit the effects styrofoam has on the environment, it is best to limit its use or reuse it. Certain Types of Glassware and Ceramics Ceramics and glassware that has a high melting point should not be placed in a recycling bin because they will not melt when procured at a recycling facility. If you have things like mirrors, old coffee mugs or baking dishes, find a way to repurpose or donate them. Pizza Boxes Cardboard is recyclable, so it would make sense that something made out of cardboard could get recycled. However, pizza boxes and other types of food-takeout boxes are the exception. The cardboard absorbs grease and is coated in food waste. Currently, there is no way to separate the grease and food from the paper. Putting the cardboard food boxes in with the regular cardboard contaminates recyclable cardboard with grease and food. Hazardous Household Waste Hazardous waste that should not get recycled includes antifreeze, paint, light bulbs and batteries. Most recycling companies are not able to process these types of materials. A & A Midwest can dispose of your old antifreeze and lead batteries, though. You can bring it to our location in North Las Vegas at 2580 North Commerce Street or call 702-649-7776 to speak with one of our professionals about what A & A Midwest can recycle for you. If you have these items and want to dispose of them, some areas have special facilities designed to handle these types of items. Shredded Paper This is another item that you would assume gets recycled. The main issue with shredded paper is that it is hard to sort from the non-recyclable items. Shredded paper also has the potential to clog up the recycling centers’ machinery. Instead of putting shredded paper in the recycling bin, consider putting it in the compost bin. Paper is biodegradable (it still takes 40 years to decompose if exposed to the sun). ...read more

Five Mistakes You Make Recycling

When it comes to recycling, most people don't put much thought into what or how they recycle. There are a few things to consider before attempting to tidy up your ecological footprint. Here are some common mistakes that people make when it comes to recycling.
1. Is it recyclable or not?
Are you clear about what you can and can't recycle? Many people are surprised to find out that they can recycle wine corks, car batteries, car fluids, home furniture and even mattresses. Newspaper and plastics are also recyclable. Aluminum foil can be washed and reused, then recycled. If you are not sure about what can be recycled, check for it here .
2. What about plastic bottle caps?
Starting in 2012, recycling facilities began accepting bottles and bottle caps. Prior to 2012, you would have to separate them. Thanks to the advocacy of the Association of Post-consumer Plastic Recyclers. To recycle bottles and caps, just make sure the bottle is empty, smashed, put the cap back on, and toss into any public recycling bin. Most grocery stores have recycling bins near the entrances and exits of the store.
3. What should you do with cardboard and soiled paper?
Every year, Americans consume 69 million tons of paper. Therefore, recycling it is a must. You will have to remove the soiled areas of paper from the rest of it, because it can damage a recycling facility. That said, recycling the salvageable, unsoiled paper will still improve the environment.
4. Are you reusing your plastic bags?
You may not have noticed that your local supermarket has recycling bins specifically for your plastic grocery bags! We encourage you to save your plastic bags and reuse them as lunch bags or for other practical purposes like padding when packing breakable items for a move. If you are certain you have no use for your extra plastic bags, return them to your grocer.
5. Are you recycling before re-purposing?
We encourage you to experiment re-purposing your recyclable items. For example, children can use cottage cheese containers as flower pots to learn how to garden. Glass jars are great for vases or as kitchen utensil organizers. Your old clothes work great as dust rags instead of using half a roll of paper towels. Try being creative. It's for a good cause! Most major urban areas have public recycling programs in place. Las Vegas still lags the nation in public recycling programs, but you can click here for facilities to recycle everything from paper and plastic to big-ticket items like your old furniture. For your car batteries, car fluids and any other recyclable auto part, visit A&A Midwest at 2580 North Commerce Street in North Las Vegas or call 702-649-6777. ...read more

Three Good Reasons To Recycle Your Old Electronics

Technology is advancing, and new innovations are being introduced every day in an attempt to make life easier and more convenient. As a result, however, a growing number of people are choosing to continually upgrade their current devices to keep up with the advancements. While this is a great way to keep up with today's world, you are left with an old device that you no longer use. There are three good reasons you should choose to recycle these items rather than just throw them out. 1. Identity Theft a Growing Concern We have all heard the news headlines regarding identity theft and the devastating results it can have on its victims. If you are preparing to get rid of an old phone or computer, chances are there is identifying information and secured data that you wouldn't want to fall into the wrong hands. When you choose to recycle with a reputable business that buys recyclable materials, you can rest assured that the private information stored on such devices will be properly and safely terminated 2. Nothing Goes to Waste When you simply throw away your old devices, they end up with other trash and contribute to the overcrowding of landfills around the country. Here at A&A; Midwest, we use most parts of your electronic device. From the glass on your computer screen to the intricate wiring that allows it to operate, we find a use for it. So, you can upgrade your technology and reduce your carbon footprint in the process. 3. You Could Face Harsh Penalties Most people don’t realize that in a growing number of areas, throwing out your old mobile device is an illegal practice. In fact, there was a recent situation in which Target was ordered to pay over $22 million in fines after they were discovered dumping “e-waste”. You should not put yourself at risk of fines or criminal charges when A & A Midwest is just a click away. We will ensure your electronics are properly disposed of within the legal guidelines of your area. The staff here at A&A; Midwest is here to help you ditch your old devices and desktops safely, so visit us at http://www.aamidwest.com/recycling/sell-us-your-scrap-metal/ today ...read more
