There are a few key factors that need to be considered when embarking on hiring a consulting firm. From years of experience consulting, we have compiled a short list of things that every business seeking consulting should consider before spending money on a consultant. Be certain you’re ready and are able to weather these 8 factors. You recognize opportunity for improvement and that consulting is typically an investment in tomorrow, and may not necessarily provide a solution for difficulties today. Many companies seek outside help after a problem has occurred. Be sure that you are hiring the right kind of consultant for your needs. Note: If your company is seeking immediate help, be prepared to prepay for your services because a consultant may be wary of structuring their payments for a company in distress. You have a vision of what the outcome will be from the improvement. This sounds very simple, but many businesses (particularly in healthcare) may be profitable because of a forgiving local business climate, not because of their planning. A business needs to know the end game. What does a successful solution look like? how does it behave? Why are you seeking improvement? You need to know these things to provide a good picture to the person who is helping you. Remember that you are typically paying a consultant because you don’t want to pay to employ someone who possesses this expertise. Although there may be a large expense to hire your consultant, it is typically short term… Unless you’re unprepared to hire a consultant. You’re paying someone to help you develop your vision and create an action strategy, not paying someone to give you your vision. There’s a word for that person.. EMPLOYEE. You’re seeking insight and suggestions (not just being open to them when they are given). Know that you’re paying for advice, counseling and expertise. You’re not the sole expert. If you need help because you just don’t have time, then hire an agency. We see this a lot. They need advertising tools, not an advertising strategy. That’s a job for an advertising firm. A consultant, while knowledgeable about advertising, may not have the time or resources to perform the functions that an ad company has. Consultant=Strategy and execution. You have the desire to change things: If you’re hiring a consultant, you need to be willing to make reasonable changes. You’re committed to the change and challenges to culture and habits. You shouldn’t hire a consultant if you don’t have the skill or desire to manage the culture change that may be required to facilitate the journey and execute the plan. Many companies hire consultants for the plans, but when they fail to direct the culture changes, undermine the process and/or lead by lower level employee consensus or their popularity, the project is doomed to fail. Don’t waste your money on a consultant. Hire more lower level employees instead. You can protect your attitude during difficult discussions.Recognize that a lot of times, a business owner/operator is busy working in the business and may not have the perspective on the market, productivity tools and methods that their competitors have. They also may not realize that their competitors are taking steps to prepare for a shift in consumer preference and behavior. You provide honest and timely feedback on directing and suggestions. Remember that this is your vision and it should be your passion. Your results will be better and your bill will be smaller if you provide good, concise and timely feedback on the project and its direction. You can lead a culture change and hold employees and stake holders accountable to it. If you’re a consensus owner/manager, then you will need to consider that you may not have the ability to lead the cultural evolution that will support the changes you are asking a consultant to help you make.
