How to Train Job Interviewers for Employment Services

Recruiters for employment agencies must be prepared to interview large numbers of applicants. To train job interviewers for employment services, explain the importance of steering away from questions that might seem discriminatory. Teach interviewers how to greet applicants and ask appropriate questions.

  • Cover the basics about discriminatory practices. Interviewers must be taught to avoid all questions that might be interpreted as discriminatory. For example, asking someone if they have a child or a babysitter is crossing the line into the personal arena. Avoiding all questions related to health, culture, religion or similar characteristics is highly important. When taking notes during the interview, no personal information should be written down about the applicant.

  • Train job interviewers to review job requirements carefully. In order to ask appropriate questions, an interviewer must be closely familiar with the required qualifications and tasks. Reviewing this information prior to the applicant's arrival allows for a smooth interview.

  • Teach interviewing etiquette. Putting applicants at ease, looking them in the eyes and shaking hands upon meeting and parting are important parts of successful interviewing. Making a bit of small talk also may be necessary before starting the interview.

  • Demonstrate an interviewing technique. A behavioral interview explores how an applicant handled work situations in the past. Other types of interviews focus on information gathering. Determine which style is more suitable for the particular employment service. Train job interviewers by allowing them to conduct mock interviews and practice their new skills with one another.
