I have been waiting a week in the Vegas dumber with a 16 month old child without A/C because they don't know how to answer phones or check emails. Out of the 20 odd times I called they only picked up 3 times and never returned any of my voicemails. And when they did pick up the woman was rude and abrasive like it's not a big deal to have it constantly 90 degrees in my house with a small child. Unless you want to speak with a lawyer like I am, stay far away. ...read more

HPAC Engineering magazine by John Scofield "A Paler Shade of Green"
I recently read an article in HPAC Engineering magazine by John Scofield "A Paler Shade of Green" (January 2013). Very helpful - it is a follow-up on "Green" projects' claims. In particular, the focus was on a college campus building that was expected, and widely acclaimed and discussed, to be a net zero energy building. Even to be an energy exporter to the grid. Basically, due to the sophisticated photovoltaics (PV) arrays, energy efficient design, etc, it would provide energy back to the local power purveyor (I wonder if they will pay those Demand Fees....?). Sounds pretty good, don't it? I wish my house was that way. But after some real unbiased investigation, comparing utility bills, reviewing (yes actually reading and interpreting) energy data, this was not really the case. I recommend all engineers read this article. Reality is what we want mostly to deal in, not hype. I am not saying abandon our green efforts, LEED, sustainable design - NO. But a little hindsight is very helpful. Don't get caught up in the superficial world of make-believe, building awards, LEED certifications, and all the great parties and ceremonies that accompany these....without looking back and checking how your building or HVAC design is really doing. Stories like these are good for us designers to take a second look at system design and pre-design expectations. Sorry to knock the wind out of some sails. But doing this due diligence is sure to blow those sails in the right direction - responsibility, accuracy, and reality. ---a friendly note from SPARKS ENGINEERING, LLC ...read more
