How I got started in the floral design business!!

My name is Mike McDonald and I am a custom floral designer.  I've been asked many times over the years how I got into this line of business?  Did I take college courses in floral design?  Well, no.  It was actually by accident.  Around 20 years ago I was out of work and desperate for a job.  All of my work experience had been in cutomer service and retail.  I applied for a management position at a Texas gift shop owned by Yellowrose Touring and Special Events in Dallas.  At the end of the interview the owner asked if I could arrange flowers; so I said sure.  I needed this job in a bad way!!  So I created this awful arrangement and she loved it and hired me on the spot.  From that point on I started learning as much as I could about floral designing.  I was also very blessed to meet several wonderful designers who took me under their wings and shoped me the ropes.  I quickly realized that I was a natural at it.  I spent the next 2 years designing for huge special event parties.  It was one of the coolest times of my life.  I thank God every day for the gift of creativity and design.  I can't imagine doing anything else that would be more rewarding to me.  I have been given the chance to share in some of my client's most intimate moments in their lives.  What a blessing!!!!  The one thing I would say to anyone wanting to get into the floral desing business is don't be scared or intimidated.  I was terrified at first, but I put my faith in God and he guided me through the hard times and gave me the support and guidance when I needed it the most.  It has truly been a glorious journey and I look forward to every day! ...read more
