What is a Stroker Motor?

There are two different types of stroker motors. You can destroke a motor or upstroke a motor. One common version would be a 383 stroker, which is an upstroke version. It is a 350 block with a 400 small block crank. In this version, you would grind the mains down on a 400 crank to fit in the 350 block; or you have the option to buy an aftermarket crank ready to install after clearancing the block for the rod clearance. This would accomplish more horsepower and torque. Putting a larger stroke crank in a small bore engine. The most common version in destroking a motor is a 377 which is a 400 block with a 350 crank. In this version, you have the option to buy spacer bearings and use 350 main bearings for a drop in assembly. You can also purchase the exact bearings to do the same. Benefits of destroking in this motor is it will rev really fast and can sustain higher RPMs better than the 383 because of the shorter stroke. The bottom line is a wish for more torque and more horsepower in the current block being used. In either instance it changes the characteristics of the motor and develops more horsepower and more torque. These practices are commonly used in racing. Drag racing, circle track, mud drags, tough trucks. Any kind of racing that involves a V8, you can put a stroker in. The 377 is more of a racing motor. You want the increased RPMs on the start. On a 383 it's a stump puller. Lots of torque. It doesn't need the rpm but rather the torque to do the work. The 383 is often something done to farm pickups to gain the necessary torque for heavy pulling.  My Blog ...read more
