Contracted this company to perform ground work on a new bathroom in basement. Asked them to complete plumbing ground work and would finish the rest the next spring. After multiple delays while they worked on larger commercial clients that took priority, they left the job in shambles. The concrete work was sub par and is cracked/buckling. They left an in-ground drain pipe for a future shower uncapped which leaked under my basement concrete floor and caused widespread buckling/cracking. They also left an upright drain that they were supposed to route my shower drain into uncapped and simply stuck a rag in it. This did not stop sewer gasses from leaking inside the home. I have been unable to communicate with them reliably and all they will do is send me invoices for the full amount of the quoted work. I now have a shiny new collections account with them for the full amount, not even a discount for the unfinished work. They also installed new toilets (well, tried) at my grandparent's house and left that job unfinished as well. The worst part is, this business is owned by the son of a family friend who ran a business with the utmost integrity and respect for the customer. Truly shameful... ...read more

Ceiling Fans Help Save Money

Ceiling fans are an inexpensive way to add comfort to your home throughout the year. By operating your ceiling fans properly, you can cool off your home and save money at the same time by cutting down the use of your air conditioning. You can save on energy bills by placing ceiling fans throughout your home. When you're using a ceiling fan, you can then raise the thermostat setting, resulting in reduced air conditioning energy consumption up to 40% or more while still keeping your room cool. Summer = Counterclockwise Most ceiling fans have a clockwise setting and a counterclockwise setting, each appropriate for a different season. A ceiling fan’s direction in the summer should be rotating counterclockwise or forward to produce a cool breeze by the downward airflow. The thermostat won’t actually change but the room will seem several degrees cooler. During the summer, you should have your ceiling fans running on high with the air blowing down directly below the fan. Raise the temperature on your thermostat by a few degrees. Your ceiling fan doesn’t directly cool the air by itself, but it helps circulate the cool air better. Set the Fan Stand under the fan and turn it on. If you feel a breeze from the fan, then it's set on the summer setting, usually counterclockwise. Otherwise, turn off the fan, climb up near the base of the fan, and look for a little button or switch that sets the fan to run in the opposite direction. Flip the switch and turn the fan back on. You should now feel a nice breeze. When to Turn it Off Make sure to turn your ceiling fans off when you leave home. With a programmable thermostat, you can set your air conditioning unit to turn off and on based on when you’ll be home. Unfortunately, most ceiling fans don’t offer this feature; instead, you’ll have to turn them on and off yourself. If you’re worried you’ll forget to turn off the ceiling fans, include turning off the fans in your daily routine before you leave home. Turn off the lights and coffee pot, lock the doors, and turn off your ceiling fans. Contact Energy Star for more information on ceiling fan installation and usage. Contact an electrician to install a ceiling fan. ...read more
