Major attractions include Mama Ginnas (best pizza in the area) and a good selection of quaint bed and breakfast lodges in the area. Bad service deducts from 5 star beauty. Do not use the director services. That was the rip off of the day. Aside from practically no direction, director Danielle added a chair to the front row and "directed" an unauthorized change in seating to what bride and mother of the bride specified at the rehearsal. We were unaware until the wedding started and the seating faux pas has caused a family issue. Director was nowhere to be found when some of our vendors arrived. An extra table was set than number in our director-provided layout, leaving us a centerpiece issue. Tent lights were "blown" according to the venue management and did not all come on for our evening reception. Venue management did not inform of us of MAJOR liquor license change until 3 WEEKS before the wedding. Of course, we already were contracted with a caterer for alcohol. Director "forgot" to place item on the table that was part of the ceremony and on and on. Efforts to call and ask to speak to the director's boss have failed. I keep getting connected right to the director, even if I just call and ask for her boss's name!!!! That was almost a whole other star deduction, but venue is so very undeniably beautiful. ...read more

Now is a great time to plant a tree.  Even if we get another hard frost, the tree can be protected as it works to establish a firm foothold before it gets hot.  There are many showy specimen trees available, if that's what you are looking for, but consider planting a native North Carolina tree.  This state fluctuates between flood and drought, which can be very stressful to plants.   Plants that come from our region a better able to handle our crazy, North Carolina weather better than plants imported from other places.  One good example of a tree that is NOT suited our area is the lovely, but brittle Bradford Pear.  In the spring, they show off billowy, white clouds of blossoms, unfortunately, not being a native tree, their structure leaves them ill-equipped to handle our gusty winds.  Spring and summer storms can reduce a Bradford Pear to kindling as it snaps trunks and large branches in no time.  Instead of the Bradford Pear, consider a Crabapple or Cherry tree or, if you are willing to trade spring blooms for fall fire, try the Red Maple.  All three alternative choices will thrive well in this region.
