During early and late spring, there are certain insect, and butterflies that come out which feed on the leaves of trees and other vegetation. This is the time when they become most active and they gobble a lot of leaves so that they can metamorphose into the next cycle of their lives. However, there are some of them that become pests and instead of tolerating their existence, they can post a threat to some trees that we already have. The eastern tent caterpillar thrives on wild cherry, apple and crabapple. You may even find them in hawthorn, maple, cherry, peach, pear and plum trees as well. You may even find them crossing your driveway when your orchard is infested with them. Their population becomes numerous at times and there are instances when outbreaks happen. They make silken nests that are not nice to look at on trees. This little pest can actually defoliate a tree when their population on it is uncontrolled. Their nests aren’t pleasant to look at as well. You may see their nests on excess defoliation. The nests which are in silk form are attached to the tree’s crotches of limbs and they grow. The eastern tent caterpillar’s larvae are a problem when they get the chance to cross over protected areas where they further pupate. They walk and cross from one plant to the other and you may even have times when you see them crossing on your driveway. As a result, you squash them up and they create a terrible mess. Those that survive the season turn into moths and the cycle begins again. They mate; lay new eggs and the eggs hibernate in winter. There is only one generation a year from this insect. There are pesticides that can be used to control their population. To keep the trees alive you will have to inspect them closely. Once the leaves or needles turn brown it is probably too late to save a tree. Therefore it's always a good idea to take a good look at your foliage. The best course of action when you think a tree is infected is to call in a professional arborist as soon as possible. The arborist might be able to save the tree and if removal is necessary can do it in a safe manner that won't spread the disease. Other steps that can be taken to prevent the spread of such diseases include: • The quick removal of dead or severely infected trees to prevent the spread of disease. • Digging trenches two to three feet in depth around infected trees. This cuts the roots through which most fungal infections that kill trees spread. • Pruning and trimming trees only in cool or cold weather. Pruning trees in warm weather can actually spread some tree diseases. • Quickly disposing of wood from dead or infected trees because keeping it around can cause tree diseases to spread. • Monitoring the trees on neighboring properties to make sure they are not infected. • Having a professional arborist look at your trees on a regular basis to make they are healthy. • Planting species of trees that are known to be disease resistant. • Regular spraying of fungicides and other chemicals that can prevent the spread of tree diseases. ...read more
