Food Sensitivities. Hidden opposition on the road to optimal nutrition
The American diet has many flaws. It is processed, full of hidden sugars, and chemical-laden, but did you know that natural foods can cause unpleasant side effects that typically go undetected? These symptoms can range from headaches to abdominal pain and even weight gain. A food sensitivity is not a food allergy. An insensitivity can occur with foods that you tolerate well and even eat daily. However, food tolerance does not guarantee safety against the body’s inflammatory response. This ongoing inflammation or “chronic inflammation” is what causes symptoms and some of these effects can be detrimental to health. To make matters even more complicated, food sensitivities are often difficult to identify because reactions occur days after food ingestion. The good news is that testing for food sensitivities is simple. A finger stick blood sample is all that is needed and this is sent to a special lab to test the blood for antibodies (part of the body’s defense against harmful exposures). If antibodies to certain foods are found it is documented on the lab results and scored for severity. A doctor or certified specialist then analyzes these results and discusses a treatment plan to reduce the inflammatory reaction. Over time symptoms subside and people feel better; some even find it easier to lose stubborn body fat.
