If you walk down your block, you might see sheds, gazebos, pools and fences dotting your neighbors' property. Ever wondered if those individual structures are covered under your home insurance policy? It depends on your policy. Fences, sheds and other similar structures are considered "other structures" — structures on your property that are separated from your house by a clear space or connected to your home by a fence, utility line or similar connection. Some insurance providers cover "other structures," having a coverage cap of 10 percent of the home's value. This means that if your property is worth $200,000, your coverage for the combined "other structures" is $20,000. However, some insurance companies are letting homeowners opt out of combined structures coverage if they don't have these structures on their property. What does this mean? If your garage is detached, then it's considered an "other structure."If your detached garage is worth more than 10 percent of your home's value, then you should talk with your insurance agent about adding more coverage. If you have a pool, gazebo or shed, those are considered "other structures."Most gazebos and sheds won't be more than 10 percent of the value of your house, but what about your pool? Fences, decks or patio are considered to be "other structures."These structures are hardly ever worth more than 10 percent of the value of your home, so there's no need to increase coverage. If you don't have other structures on your property,talk to your independent insurance agent to ensure that you aren't paying extra for coverage that you don't need.
