Sears Driving School

I was a little disappointed by the inexperience of the instructor and the lack of knowledge about the city streets. I was expecting someone with at least 5 years of experience, not someone with less than a year (especially at $75/hour). Instructor was pretty laid back but at times I worried he wasn't paying close attention to where we were going. There was a lot of confusion about the directions, which is the last thing a new driver needs to worry about ("turn left, no wait, turn right.... actually no, keep going straight..wait, yeah, straight"). The actual parking lot instruction with the cones was useful since we weren't out in actual traffic, and was the redeeming quality of the instruction. But if you're looking for experienced instructors, look elsewhere. ...read more

I really like museums, but this one was really disappointing, especially considering the cost ($31 per person for museum admission, the Tut exhibit and the Omnimax movie). \t\n\t\nThe King Tut exhibit was especially disappointing. On the advertisement brochure, you see the large golden mask, which is identified with King Tut. You will never see that mask in the museum, just on photos. \t\n\t\nThe exhibit starts in a large empty room, which is supposed to look like the entry to a tomb or something. You get to hear a short narrative by Harrison Ford about Egypt. Then, you enter the exhibit itself.\t\n\t\nThe exhibit is largely a collection of statues of various pharaohs or their queens. There are also a number of jars made of various materials, which were used to hold oils or embalmed body parts.\t\n\t\nThere are also pieces of furniture, like a wooden bed. There were some other things (necklaces, a diadem), but not really anything memorable. They did have a replica of his mummy, which was made by stereolithography. In other words, the mummy was made by a computer, of plastic. But someone did a pretty good job painting it.\t\n\t\nMembers of the museum get significant discounts, but members of associated museums only get $4 off, so a membership in ASTC doesn't have much value. \t\n\t\nThe Omnimax movie was also disappointing. They explain that the mummification process was kept a secret, and not well documented. After a lot of research, an Egyptologist thought he understood it, and so mummified a real person recently, in order to understand how to possibly extract DNA from mummies. They learned that the most reliable place to extract DNA from was the bones, so that is where they extracted DNA material from Tutankhamen. They figured out who his parents were. They hope that this may also help them find a cure for malaria, as King Tut had malaria. \t\n\t\nYeah, didn't make much sense when I heard it during the movie either.\t\n\t\nFor $31 per person for museum admission, the Tut exhibit and the omnimax movie, it was not worth it. I felt a little bad for people who brought kids to see this thing, it had to be even more disappointing to them.\t\n\t\nI think you'd be just as well off to buy a DVD of Tut's stuff, which would be cheaper, and you'd get to see more. ...read more

We have had our daughter that CHM for 1 year; she started when she was about 8 months old in the infant room. The teachers in the infant room are wonderful, with just the right mix of quite cuddles, stroller rides and stories, and peppy, playful activities and adventures, so you don?t feel like they?re missing anything. The next room is the older infant room where the teachers have an amazing amount of patience, and really work with the parents on matters of discipline (not an easy thing, at least for us :). Our daughter loved the group activities in the OIR and fell in love with reading books. She's currently in the young toddler room where she's learning so much it?s hard for us to keep up with her. We're amazed everyday when she comes home with another thing she?s learned (colors, letters, numbers, words, songs, etc.). We have always been very pleased with the program, the teachers and the directors at the center. Every parent wonders if they are doing the right thing by sending their children to day care. Well, I can tell you that I drop her off in the morning without a fuss; all of her little friends coming running to hug her. And when we pick her up in the afternoon, she is happy as can be. What more could parents ask for? ...read more

Our daughter has attended CHM for about a year now, so she has made the transition into 3 different rooms (infant, older infant and young toddler). We have been very pleased with the program, the teachers and the directors of the center. Our daughter loves it there and we are continually impressed with the activities she participates in, the things she learns, and how much she likes her caregivers. It's really wonderful to watch. I used to love the science museum. Took my wife there on our first date to see a wonderful film at the Omnitheater. But since moving to the new facility and spending millions of dollars, they have turned themselves into a huge, oversized, begging for dollars, nothing worth seeing in the galleries dissapointment for the family. Today, while simply wanting shows playing and movie times it was requiring me to created an account to view future times. What a scam! Another way to get myself on another mailing list, get more junk mail, and to be hassled for a donation. This once great place for exciting fun and learning for the whole family has turned into a dismal place not unlike the political fundraising machines or the fundraising telethons of public broadcasting....and no, I don't want another Dr. Who picto-graph! This place need to wake up, and so do the donators. Expect more out of this once great St. Paul icon, or it will be yet another one of the boring, nothing to do and see places in a once great city. ...read more

My idealistic view that all educators (in highly populated cities) are accepting and non-judgmental was wrong. The fact that there are educators who will openly criticize a parent?s values, or philosophy- not only to another person, but at times in front of that child, made me seriously question the professionalism in this center. I also assume the director of a childcare facility should make certain that such behaviors do not exist- and especially not partake in such conversations. After speaking with some teachers at this center, I was also made aware that it's in fact director who is ultimately responsible for creating such a hostile working environment, making relationships between staff difficult, which in turn brings an unacceptable learning environment for young children. Although some may find Children's House Montessori to be a great place, I can't help but wonder why this information was brought to my attention. ...read more
