How to Complete Entrance Counseling for a Federal Student Loan

There are two types of Federal Student Loans that require entrance counseling: Unsubsidized/Subsidized and PLUS loans.  Entrance counseling for a student loan is required before any college or university will be able to disburse any federal loan money.   Entrance counseling is easily completed online in 20-30 minutes.

1. Sign into your Federal Student Loan account.  You will need your social security number, the first two letters of your last name, your date of birth and your Federal Student Aid PIN.  If you do not have a PIN, you will need to register for one. A PIN will then be sent to you.  It's also a good idea to have your school's full name and financial aid code handy.

2. Begin registration.  It will ask for your basic personal information and what school you are attending.  Fill out all of the requested information honestly and to the best of your abilities.

3.  Read the Student Loan information that is presented thoroughly.  After each section, you will be quizzed on the contents.  If you miss too many answers, you may be required to read the material again.

4. Read the Borrower's Rights and Responsibilities section carefully because it is your guide to understanding and paying back your Federal student loan. This section has important information such as how to pay your loan after graduation or how to request forbearance.

5. Hit submit.  Once you have submitted the last page, the Entrance Counseling completion notification is sent to your college or university's financial aid department but it is wise to print the verification page for your own records.
