Recently I explained to a Project Manager I know that a recent project we had done incorporated tens of thousands of line of code. His response "If you have that many lines of code then you're not a very efficient programmer." Wow, I was stunned by this statement. Was my team really a bunch of nitwits who knew only how to program "long form" and did not know how to make their code more efficient and reusable? So I set off on a journey of discovery to determine how many lines of code we could eliminate to determine if my team and I were really inefficient as this Project Manager had suggested. After several hours of reviewing all the code with some very expensive analysis software to help, the only refactoring changes in the entire application boiled down to changing only a couple hundred lines of code.
