Best Brands Manuals & Software LLC

By cardude

I usually order my factory repair manuals from Helms, since they are the authorized publisher for most all makes. This time I decided to try shopping around on the net, and came across these folks on the website "autorepairmanuals.biz". They advertised the 3-volume factory repair manual for my 2002 Camaro Z28 for $200, compared to $275 from Helms. After confirming on the phone that this was indeed the same manual, I placed my order and was told I would get it in about 2 weeks. When I called 2 weeks later to get a status (since I hadn't received the item yet), I was told that the item still hadn't come in, and it should come in "any day now". I was a little disappointed, but I figured things like this happen, so I'll wait. In the meantime I decided to do a search for complaints against this business (I know, I should have done that first). I could only find one on Webutations that talked about ordering a manual, then being told they couldn't sell it "at that price" anymore and wanting to charge double the original price. The post also added that they refunded him promptly after he told them he didn't want to pay that price. At this point I was a little concerned, so I checked my credit card charges and found that I was charged for this item when I placed the order (rather than being charged when the item ships). I then looked up the manual on their website again and found they now listed it at $270! I called to check the status at week 3 and was told by the same woman I spoke to the week before that the item still hadn't come in, and it should come in "any day now". Additionally, I noted that whenever I spoke to this woman there was never any noise in the background (as if she were in an office with other staff). I put this together with the experience the other reviewer left and started to suspect that this is a small operation which doesn't update it's pricing until someone orders an item and then they either try to upcharge the customer when they find out they priced an item too low, or constantly tell you it's due "any day now" until you decide to cancel the order. Either that or they outright like to bait and switch their pricing. I gave it one more week, and at week 4 had the exact same conversation with the same woman. This time she offered to refund my card and asked if I would like her to call me when it comes in. I accepted the refund but declined the call back. The refund posted in 2 days and I promptly ordered the manuals from Helms. They shipped it 2 days after I ordered it and I received it one week later. The moral is buy from the reliable (and authorized) source when you want genuine factory manuals and get to work on your car sooner. ...read more

By Jason Fedewa at Yellowbook

Last two times I've used All A's I have had to take it to another shop to get it fixed right. Last time they had my car for a month. I had to call them. I was forgotten and they didn't even fix what I took it in for. Instead of an appology I got a bill. Couple of shady fixes. My list could go on. I would recommend you take your vehicle elsewhere. ...read more

When is it time to replace your shocks and struts?

It's relatively easy for most vehicle owners to determine when their tires, brakes and windshield wipers are worn out. Shocks and struts, on the other hand, aren't nearly as simple to inspect, in spite of the fact that these safety-critical components are highly susceptible to everyday wear and tear. Experts recommend replacement of automotive shocks and struts at 50,000 miles. Testing has shown that original equipment gas-charged shocks and struts degrade measurably by 50,000 miles*. For many popular-selling vehicles, replacing these worn shocks and struts can improve the vehicle's handling characteristics and comfort. ...read more
